The Hiawatha Red Hawks traveled to Topeka on Friday night to kick off a District contest against the state ranked Hayden Wildcats.

Friday night’s match up between the Hiawatha Red Hawks and Oskaloosa Bears--the first ever meeting between the two teams as they faced off in a District tilt--started off looking like it would be a slow moving slugfest, but ended as a track meet, as Hiawatha sprinted away from the Bears for a 42-6 win.The first quarter flew by, as the Red Hawks took the opening possession and marched down the field, capping the drive with a Rhen Hageman touchdown to go up 7-0.

After a strong middle of the season to overcome a slow start, the Hiawatha Lady Red Hawk volleyball team found a rough patch over the past two weeks, including going 1-6 over the past week. The Hawks have another week and a triangular at Sabetha to right the ship before postseason play begins.

The bye week is now in the rearview mirror, and with a bit of rest, the Kansas City Chiefs dispatched a notable foe in the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday afternoon by a score of 28-18–their second straight win over at least two scores.

The Hiawatha Lady Red Hawks bounced back after a rough week last week, playing winning volleyball over the past week, winning three of their five games, including taking two of three at Monday’s Regional at Royal Valley.

The Hiawatha cross country team, under Coach Becky Shamburg, has reached the time of the season that they live for. Whether it is a strong team that has State aspirations, or outstanding individuals who hope to make their mark, there are always goals that revolve around the final races of the year. Last Thursday marked the beginning of the postseason, as the Red Hawks traveled to Banner Creek Reservoir to take part in the very first Big East League Meet.

Saturday marked the final race of the season for the Hiawatha cross country team, and the Lady Red Hawks did not disappoint, as the team finishing seventh as a squad, including one individual top 10 result at the Class 3A State meet at Lawrence’s Rim Rock Farm.Sophomore Pauly Rockey continued her outstanding season, finishing ninth in the biggest meet of the season, with a time of 20:01.2.

The season has come to an end for the Hiawatha Red Hawks, as the team traveled to Hayden High School in Topeka for a rematch in the opening round of the Kansas Class 3A State Football Tournament. Hayden had the upper hand the entire way in this one, cruising to the 56-6 victory.

A 9-0 start to the season is nothing to sniff at, and the Kansas City Chiefs are the NFL’s lone undefeated team, and are at least two games up on every team in the league except the 8-1 Detroit Lions. The only problem is that the Chiefs haven’t looked like one of the league’s best teams, and their 16-14 great escape of the Denver Broncos on a last second field goal block did nothing to enhance the optics. So what does it all mean, or does it mean anything at all?

In the past two weeks, the Kansas City Chiefs have lost their perfect season, and followed that up with a last second victory over one of the worst teams in the league. The results raise questions about the current state of the team, but ultimately, the Chiefs are now 10-1, in first place in the AFC and one step closer to wrapping up a bye in the playoffs.
