Steven Aaron Zwick, 29, of Airdrie pleaded guilty to second-degree murder Monday in the February 2024 killing of Calgary's Chelsea Davidenas and was sentenced to life with no parole eligibility for 15 years. A second man goes to trial in 2027.

Jimmy John's is opening its first Calgary location in University District this fall, near the University of Calgary, Foothills Medical Centre and the Alberta Children's Hospital. It's the chain's second Alberta store, and the franchisor behind it plans up to 200 Canadian locations.

James Joseph O'Kane, 35, was released on statutory release from Bowden Institution in central Alberta on Monday and will live in Winnipeg. Police consider him at high risk to reoffend against women. He is subject to parole conditions and a lifetime weapons ban.

Arbutus Landscaping Inc. pleaded guilty August 19 to failing to establish a system to ensure compliance with Alberta's OHS laws, as prime contractor at an Edmonton construction site where a worker died after falling through a roof in December 2023. A roofing company faces 24 counts over the same incident and is sentenced September 10.

Canada will impose counter-tariffs of 15, 25 and 50 per cent on roughly 700 American products starting September 8, alongside a $7.5-billion support package. Premier Danielle Smith says she appreciates the relief but wants Ottawa to use the next two weeks to restart negotiations.

Marklester Cruz, 41, was arrested July 30 and charged with sexual assault of a minor and sexual interference. Edmonton police released his name and photograph because they believe there may be additional victims who have not come forward, and because they have reasonable grounds to believe he may continue to pose a risk to vulnerable youth. The charges have not been tested in court.

Emissions Reduction Alberta is funding five Edmonton-area projects with $15.7 million from the TIER fund, backing companies working on hydrogen refuelling, low-carbon cement, hemp-based textiles, methanol from captured CO2, and a reactor that makes hydrogen without water.

RCMP received reports on August 19 that a Manning student had threatened to shoot students on the first day of school. Police executed a search warrant at a local residence on August 25 and seized seven firearms. A 16-year-old will be charged with uttering threats, pending Crown approval.

The eastbound Rainbow Valley Bridge reopened the weekend of August 22 after just over a year of closure, giving commuters three eastbound lanes on Whitemud Drive. Westbound has two lanes between 122 Street and 142 Street, expanding to three west of 142. All four lanes in each direction open this fall.
