FRANKLIN COUNTY — The Annual Literacy Volunteers Poetry Contest is free for all ages and open from February 14 to March 31 to residents of Franklin and Somerset Counties and the towns of Livermore, and Livermore Falls. First, second, and third place winners will be selected in 4 categories: Youth age 11 and under, Youth age 12-17, Adults 18+, and Students of Maine Literacy Volunteers Affiliates. (Maine Literacy Volunteers Students category is open to Maine residents who are students of Literacy Volunteers in Maine.)

JAY – At the Jay Select Board meeting on Monday night, board members voted to approve Jay Fire Chief Mike Booker’s request to spend an additional $4,055.70 on repairs for the Fire Rescue Department’s Engine 3.

FARMINGTON – At the RSU 9 Board of Directors meeting on Tuesday night, Director Rich Ruhlin spoke to the board regarding the previous meeting’s discussion on the fundraising plan for the Mt. Blue High School Competition Field expenses.

JAY – On Tuesday night, members of the Jay Select Board approved statewide arrest powers for the Jay Police Department, granting the department permission to make arrests outside of the town of Jay.

FARMINGTON - At the RSU 9 Board of Directors meeting on Tuesday night, Superintendent Christian Elkington provided his superintendent’s report and highlighted the rising number of students who are currently being raised in multi-generational and skip-households. Elkington shared an article with the board that stated the rise in children living with grandparents in the United

INDUSTRY – On Saturday afternoon, the town of Industry held its annual town meeting and passed all 39 warrant articles. Each warrant article required a show-of-hands vote with a two-thirds majority to pass, except for Article 7 which required a secret ballot vote.

JAY – At the Jay Select Board meeting on Monday night, Janice Sweeney was recognized for the 2024 Spirit of America Foundation Tribute for her volunteerism and commendable community service.

FARMINGTON – At the RSU 9 Board of Directors meeting on Tuesday night, board members discussed several new Directors who will be joining the board following the recent municipal election.

JAY – On Monday night, Town Manager Shiloh LaFreniere provided the Jay Select Board with an update regarding the May 1 rainstorm and stated that the town is expecting to receive a total of $67,411.43 in funding from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Maine Emergency Management Agency (MEMA).

JAY – On Monday night, the Jay Select Board awarded the Boston Post Cane to Hamblin “Ham” Allen, who is the oldest known resident of the Town of Jay. Allen is 102 years old and has been a resident of Jay for his entire life.
