Statesboro city and Bulloch County officials recently selected an engineering firm, pending price negotiations, to design some jointly-funded traffic improvements for the Burkhalter Road corridor.

A $1.36 million project to replace pavement and upgrade drainage along Max Lockwood Drive – usually the main route into Memorial Park and parking for the Honey Bowen Building – is moving into a new phase.

By a 3-2 vote, including Mayor Jonathan McCollar’s tiebreaker, Statesboro City Council on Tuesday evening approved a request from 4AM Development LLC to rezone its almost 27-acre site on Burkhalter Road for a two-story data center with roughly 230,000 square feet of floor space.

For those who remembered picking tobacco by hand, or the smell of the cured leaves in the old auction warehouses, the timing of Lee Waters’ presentation about the history of tobacco production, both generally and within Bulloch County, could hardly have been more appropriate.
