Communities set to celebrate National Night Out Posted Wednesday, July 30, 2025 By Alberto Gilman The Newburgh and New Windsor area, along with other communities across the country, will be participating in the annual celebration of National Night Out on Tuesday, August 5. Each of the municipalities announced their annual celebrations with activities for all of the community to enjoy. National Night Out is annually held on the first Tuesday of August and is an event that promotes police and community partnerships across the country, bringing together people in safe and fun environments where they can interact with each other and enjoy activities. The event was first introduced in August of 1984 and has continued over 40 years. Town of New Windsor New Windsor will be celebrating its 4th Annual National Night Out on Tuesday, August 5 from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Kristi Babcock Memorial Park located at 660 Mount Airy Road. Residents and town visitors alike will enjoy a night of community and police unity. The Town of New Windsor Police Department welcomes residents and families to the park to join them and other local first responders for a night of food, bouncy houses, first responder field games, K-9 demonstrations and emergency vehicles on display. Local service agencies anticipated to attend are the Orange County Sheriff's Office, the New York State Trooper's Office, New Windsor EMS, the New Windsor Fire Department and the Vails Gate Fire Department. Local community organizations and vendors also plan to be present for the annual celebration. Senator James Skoufis is sponsoring the event this year and for more information, please contact New Windsor Recreation at 845-565-7750. Lady Lions make debut at ‘It's In The Water' Classic Posted Wednesday, July 30, 2025 By Alberto Gilman The Zion Lions program, founded more than 30 years ago by Coach Harold Rayford Sr., is a nonprofit dedicated to youth development through basketball. Based in Newburgh, the organization provides a safe and competitive environment for young athletes, hosting leagues and tournaments throughout the region. The girls' teams, reestablished in 2023 and now designated as “Elite,” wrapped up strong seasons. The 16U team finished 24-5, while the 17U squad went 16-6 under head coach Ali Muhammad, a Zion Lions alumnus. The Elite status signified expanded competition, including travel tournaments and high-level opponents, similar to the organization's boys' teams. Leading the way were team captains Terri'nashjaè “TT” Burden of Newburgh Free Academy, Tessa Furst of Cornwall, and Abigail Richardson of James I. O'Neill High School. Burden led both teams in scoring, assists, steals and shooting percentage. Furst emerged as a rebounding force and defensive presence, while Richardson served as an on-court extension of the coaching staff. The Friday showcase featured Burden, Furst, Ana Sonko of Cornwall, and Jasmine Triunfo of Arlington. Burden, Furst, and Triunfo played on the Black team, while Sonko suited up for the White team. The Black team secured a 71-40 win. Burden was named Most Valuable Player and said she enjoyed the experience despite some early nerves. “It wasn't too crazy, but at first it was because I never played with some of those girls before,” she said. “Then I got comfortable.” Furst echoed the excitement. “Right from the start, when we were warming up, I could tell the girls had really nice energy,” she said. “Everyone was really supportive, and I knew regardless of whether we won or lost, I still would have had a lot of fun.” Triunfo said she was confident in her shooting and appreciated the opportunity to bond with new teammates. “Some of us had already played together, so we knew each other's games, and it was a good experience to play with others,” she said. Sonko, who played on the opposing team, contributed defensively and said she enjoyed the competitive atmosphere. “It was nice seeing my teammates fired up,” she said. “We had good energy, and we kept going and fighting.” All four players said they hope the event helps bring more girls into the program and opens the door to additional tournaments and development opportunities. Tryouts for the 2026 Newburgh Zion Lions Elite 16U and 17U teams are scheduled for Sunday, Feb. 15. Free weekend workouts are available for returning players and interested newcomers. Town resolution supports Ferry service Posted Wednesday, July 30, 2025 By Alberto Gilman The Newburgh Town Board on Monday, July 28 unanimously approved at their work session a resolution opposing the termination of the Newburgh-Beacon Ferry Service. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) announced this year the ferry service would be discontinued for the area. The decision to cease ferry service has been a point of contention with residents from Newburgh, Beacon and other municipalities along the river. The ferry service ceased following damage to the dock on the Beacon side this past winter and has been replaced by bus service for the time being. Over the past month, residents of Newburgh and the surrounding communities have been holding events to raise awareness on the issue and call on the MTA to reconsider their decision. On July 8, Councilmen Scott Manley and Jim Politi both attended a rally to Save the Ferry where over 100 people and other elected officials from the region joined together to oppose the decision. Another rally was to be held on July 29 in Beacon and the next MTA Board Meeting was set for July 30. The resolution to be voted on on Monday was presented and prepared by Town Attorney Mark Taylor. On Monday night, the town board voted on the resolution as follows: “Whereas, the Town of Newburgh is one of the northernmost municipalities in Orange County; and Whereas, Orange County is part of the Metropolitan Commuter Transportation District (MCTD) and its northern boundary is the northern boundary of the MCTD; and Whereas, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (“MTA”) provides no direct public transportation services in or to the Town of Newburgh nor is any MTA infrastructure located in the Town; and Whereas, notwithstanding the Town of Newburgh's location at the northern boundary of Orange County and the MCD and the absence of any direct MTA service to the Town, Town of Newburgh businesses and residents, in addition to fares and tolls, contribute and pay myriad taxes, fees and surcharges including but not limited to the business payroll regional mobility tax, mortgage taxes, sales taxes, franchise tax surcharges, and taxes for Orange County's payments for the statewide mass transportation operating assistance program, in support of the MTA's funding of public transportation services, including trains, buses, ferries, and subways in the greater New York City area; and Whereas, Town residents and businesses pay similar MTA fees and taxes as other, highly MTA serviced areas even though the Town receives no direct MTA public transportation services or investment and all of Orange County is served by the MTA with a single, sporadically operating train line, the Port Jervis NJ Transit line; and Whereas the MTA has indicated it secks to address its lack of service west of the Hudson, including Orange County, by pointing to ways the MTA is trying to help west-of-Hudson commuters reach trains across the river, where Metro-North's Hudson Line trains travel directly to Grand Central Terminal by “subsidizing different strategies for folks to get to the east side of the Hudson”. The resolution continues as follows: “Whereas, despite such statements, the MTA has announced it has eliminated funding for the Newburgh-Beacon Ferry and will not be investing funds in the repair of critical dock infrastructure; and Whereas the Newburgh-Beacon Ferry has been a vital transportation link between the City of Newburgh and the City of Beacon, providing essential service for commuters, including commuters from the Town of Newburgh, and contributing to the regional economy for many years; and Whereas, the ferry service was suspended in January 2025 due to the “critical dock infrastructure damage”, with further assessment revealing “significant damage” requiring “long-term solutions”; and Whereas the MTA subsequently announced the permanent discontinuance of the ferry service, citing declining ridership and an estimated annual savings of $2.1 million; and Whereas this decision will negatively impact the residents and businesses of the Town of Newburgh as well as the cities of Newburgh and Beacon, particularly those who rely on the ferry for their daily commute to jobs and other destinations in Beacon and connecting train services to New York City; and Whereas alternatives like bus service, while provided as a replacement until the end of 2025, may not fully address the needs and convenience offered by the ferry, particularly given potential traffic congestion and longer travel times and the discontinuance of ferry service runs counter to the MTA's own representations that it seeks to provide different strategies for underserved west side residents and employees in reaching the MTA's services on the east side of the Hudson River; and Whereas the ferry service, even with past fluctuations in ridership, holds potential for growth and resurgence, especially with continued efforts to promote its use and integrate it into a comprehensive regional transportation network; and Whereas the termination of the ferry service may have adverse consequences for the local economy, impacting businesses that depend on ferry users and potentially hindering economic development efforts in both Newburgh and Beacon which also benefit the Town of Newburgh.” The resolution concludes addressing the position of the town on the matter and what it seeks to be resolved: “Now, Therefore, Be It Resolved that the Town Board of the Town of Newburgh hereby expresses its strong opposition to the permanent termination of the Newburgh-Beacon Ferry service; and Be It Further Resolved that the Town of Newburgh urges the MTA and other relevant officials and agencies to reconsider this decision and actively seek viable solutions to restore and enhance the ferry service, including: Prioritizing the repair and upgrade of the ferry infrastructure in a timely and efficient manner; Exploring funding opportunities to support the long-term sustainability of the ferry service; Implementing strategies to increase ridership and promote the benefits of the ferry as a convenient and environmentally friendly mode of transportation and Engaging in meaningful dialogue with local communities to understand their needs and concerns regarding the termination of the ferry service”. Copies of the resolution were to be forwarded by the town clerk to Governor Kathy Hochul, Congressman Pat Ryan, Senator Rob Rolison, Assemblyman Jonathan Jacobson, the Federal Transit Administration, Marie Therese Dominguez, Commissioner of the New York State Department of Transportation, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), the Dutchess County Executive and Legislature, the Orange County Executive and Legislature, and the Orange County Transportation Council.

The resolution continues as follows: “Whereas, despite such statements, the MTA has announced it has eliminated funding for the Newburgh-Beacon Ferry and will not be investing funds in the repair of critical dock infrastructure; and Whereas the Newburgh-Beacon Ferry has been a vital transportation link between the City of Newburgh and the City of Beacon, providing essential service for commuters, including commuters from the Town of Newburgh, and contributing to the regional economy for many years; and Whereas, the ferry service was suspended in January 2025 due to the “critical dock infrastructure damage”, with further assessment revealing “significant damage” requiring “long-term solutions”; and Whereas the MTA subsequently announced the permanent discontinuance of the ferry service, citing declining ridership and an estimated annual savings of $2.1 million; and Whereas this decision will negatively impact the residents and businesses of the Town of Newburgh as well as the cities of Newburgh and Beacon, particularly those who rely on the ferry for their daily commute to jobs and other destinations in Beacon and connecting train services to New York City; and Whereas alternatives like bus service, while provided as a replacement until the end of 2025, may not fully address the needs and convenience offered by the ferry, particularly given potential traffic congestion and longer travel times and the discontinuance of ferry service runs counter to the MTA's own representations that it seeks to provide different strategies for underserved west side residents and employees in reaching the MTA's services on the east side of the Hudson River; and Whereas the ferry service, even with past fluctuations in ridership, holds potential for growth and resurgence, especially with continued efforts to promote its use and integrate it into a comprehensive regional transportation network; and Whereas the termination of the ferry service may have adverse consequences for the local economy, impacting businesses that depend on ferry users and potentially hindering economic development efforts in both Newburgh and Beacon which also benefit the Town of Newburgh.” The resolution concludes addressing the position of the town on the matter and what it seeks to be resolved: “Now, Therefore, Be It Resolved that the Town Board of the Town of Newburgh hereby expresses its strong opposition to the permanent termination of the Newburgh-Beacon Ferry service; and Be It Further Resolved that the Town of Newburgh urges the MTA and other relevant officials and agencies to reconsider this decision and actively seek viable solutions to restore and enhance the ferry service, including: Prioritizing the repair and upgrade of the ferry infrastructure in a timely and efficient manner; Exploring funding opportunities to support the long-term sustainability of the ferry service; Implementing strategies to increase ridership and promote the benefits of the ferry as a convenient and environmentally friendly mode of transportation and Engaging in meaningful dialogue with local communities to understand their needs and concerns regarding the termination of the ferry service”. Copies of the resolution were to be forwarded by the town clerk to Governor Kathy Hochul, Congressman Pat Ryan, Senator Rob Rolison, Assemblyman Jonathan Jacobson, the Federal Transit Administration, Marie Therese Dominguez, Commissioner of the New York State Department of Transportation, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), the Dutchess County Executive and Legislature, the Orange County Executive and Legislature, and the Orange County Transportation Council.

On most days, a range of 45 to 55 kids across grade levels can be in attendance, said NFA's Zachary Williams, head coach of the Boys Swimming and Diving team. According to Williams, the program first began back several years ago with him, Coach Pat Kavanagh and Aquatics Director Kathy Young at the time with their collective idea that with a new pool facility, it would be able to offer as many kids as possible to get in and use it. Williams also saw an opportunity to supplement his varsity programs. Swimmers have come from the summer program and it has led to overall school program success at the competitive level. As the program progressed, Williams now sees a stronger emphasis on water safety and instruction, which stems from him having children of his own now in swimming. Williams has seen children increase their swimming abilities to the level of now being able to swim safely and even save their own life. Other programs Williams highlighted that help grow and promote the sport of swimming while offering safety education include Swimfinity and the Newburgh Sharks club and Williams would like to see more promotion and support for swimming instruction for the adaptive community. As the program continues, Williams extends his gratitude to all the coaches involved and the Newburgh district administrators and staff who help plan and prepare each year for the program to run. “The beauty of the program is once you introduce that pool and swimming, most of the kids really lighten up,” said Williams. “Over the four weeks of these programs, we have this community of older kids helping younger kids, younger kids becoming kind of friends, or having mentors with older kids, while getting, in our opinion, top level swim instruction, depending on where they are.” On Friday, July 25, students spent part of the morning outside, either walking the track area or enjoying games on Academy Field. After time outside, they were then brought back inside NFA and made their way to the pool to swim for the later part of the afternoon. Kids took dives off the blocks or hung out in the shallow water on the other side of the pool. For about three years, Elian Boateng has been attending the program and says it has been very rewarding. “This program has been very fun since they provide CPR classes and they provide swimming lessons from beginner to advanced. So over the years, it's been pretty fun,” said Boateng. “It's another thing you can do in the summer instead of just staying inside.” For Zaneta Montaque, one of the newest members, she says since joining, it has changed how she is swimming and she feels confident in her technique. For her, she feels the program is important and should be shared. “I think I would share with my friends and all that, so that they can get an experience on what it feels like to be in the water,” said Montaque. With Victoria Tingling, she grew up playing multiple sports but has expressed further interest in swimming and plans to try out for the varsity squad this year. “The swimming class is good because people are starting at all different levels and they're able to show you how to go from beginner to advanced really quickly,” said Tingling. “My favorite part of the program so far has been when we learned to dive. They started me off with kneeling on the edge of the pool and then they progressively got to the blocks and now I'm diving pretty well.” Nicholas Morales came into the program the previous year and since then, he has been working upwards to the varsity swim team and has benefited from receiving an education in CPR and gaining certification. “The people here are amazing and I just love this program so much,” said Morales. “I think this program is such an amazing program. It teaches young scholars how to swim better, not only that, but learn CPR. Not a lot of people know how to do CPR, and it's good to get out of the house.” The CPR portion of the program is led by CPR First Aid Instructor David Maldonado, who within Newburgh schools is a Criminal Justice/Emergency Management Teacher. He has been with the program for a few years now and in his own words, Maldonado said it provides an outlet to students during the summertime where they can go and have fun while also learning life skills. As an educator, Maldonado tries to relate his materials and information to real life situations and experiences for his students. He recalls on the first day, he engaged with his students, talking to them and explaining the benefits of learning this material and how this can be used in everyday life. Students recently learned how to stop focus bleeding and would be learning about tourniquet kits and their uses. Each student, Maldonado explained, is going to be hands-on with lessons and materials. He helps and guides students through the class to ensure they are understanding it. Maldonado said he is also happy to know students are sharing what they learn in class to their parents, further spreading that information. Maldonado would be welcoming guest speakers and emergency professionals to spend time with his students and continue until its conclusion with additional instruction. Maldonado believes that this program is important and further encourages parents to be more involved. “It allows kids to do something more in a positive manner. It gives them something to strive for. They can enjoy themselves, still get educated, but in a fun way and not just be sitting home on their games,” said Maldonado. “With this program, it's giving them something to do. It's something that they're actually picking themselves because we don't pick these for these kids. We offer them the programs and then they pick themselves. So the fact that they're here on their own accord, I think it's fantastic.”

Dubbed “Operation Powder Burn,” the investigation uncovered a trafficking conspiracy tied to the so-called “Iron Pipeline,” a corridor for illegal firearms smuggled from states such as Georgia and Pennsylvania into New York. Authorities said 55 illegally possessed firearms — including handguns and assault-style weapons — were purchased through controlled buys, and more than 700 grams of cocaine and fentanyl were seized. “This is the largest gun trafficking case in Orange County and the entire Lower Hudson Valley,” Orange County District Attorney David Hoovler said during a press conference on Friday, Aug. 1, in Goshen. “These 20 people are merchants of death—some selling drugs, some selling guns. Either way, they need to be removed from our streets.” Hoovler said the operation involved more than 20 law enforcement agencies, including the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), National Guard, and multiple local police departments across three states. Undercover officers purchased the weapons, often using funds provided by the ATF—totaling over $69,000—to prevent them from reaching the street. In total, 67 weapons were seized during the investigation. According to Hoovler, the epicenter of the operation was a shuttered restaurant in Newburgh called The Kitchen, located at 132 South Street. Authorities allege city resident Christopher Brown was the central figure in both gun and drug trafficking operations. Brown was allegedly supplied firearms from Dijoun Lawrence and Shorna Witter in Georgia, and others by Matthew Chang, Carl Henry, and Hamp Hunter. Additional firearm suppliers were identified as Howard Hoffman, Rohan Brown, and Fitzroy Escoffery. On the narcotics side, Brown was reportedly supplied by Ian Dawes and Shomoray Lane. Hoovler said charges vary among defendants, with potential sentences ranging from probation to 15 to 30 years in prison. Three defendants are awaiting extradition, and law enforcement is actively seeking Carl Henry of East Stroudsburg, Pa., in connection with the case. Officials displayed seized firearms, cash, and investigative diagrams at the press event, which was attended by local and federal law enforcement leaders, as well as elected officials from across Orange County. The investigation used court-authorized wiretaps, search warrants, and undercover operations. Hoovler revealed that a recent wiretap uncovered threats to rob or harm undercover officers, prompting a swift conclusion to the takedown. “If you are selling illegal guns in Orange County, you are not welcome here,” Hoovler said. “We will dismantle your organization. The only suitable place for you is jail.” Other speakers included Orange County Sheriff Paul Arteta; ATF Special Agent in Charge Bryan Miller; DEA New York SAC Frank Tarentino; and police chiefs from Middletown, Port Jervis and Newburgh. Also in attendance were Orange County Executive Steven Neuhaus, Newburgh Mayor Torrance Harvey, Middletown Mayor Joseph DeStefano, and Port Jervis Mayor Dominic Cicalese. “This victory belongs to every single man and woman who played a role in the collaboration,” Harvey said. “Your actions have not only upheld the rule of law but also safeguarded countless lives.” Neuhaus noted the contributions of undercover officers and prosecutors, many of whom remain publicly unnamed due to the nature of their work. “Their thank-you is going home at night knowing they've made our community safer,” he said. Orange County passes resolution in support of ferry Posted Wednesday, August 6, 2025 By Alberto Gilman The Orange County Legislature at their Ways and Means Committee meeting on Tuesday, July 29 approved a resolution in opposition of the decision to terminate the Newburgh-Beacon Ferry service. The Town of Newburgh recently passed a similar resolution opposing the decision. Orange County Legislator Kevindaryán Luján presented the resolution on Tuesday, extending his thanks to Legislative Chairman Kevin Hines for allowing it to be brought to the floor and legislative council for their assistance in drafting. The resolution presented continues the efforts by local leaders to oppose the decision by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA). The MTA announced it would be discontinuing the ferry following damage to the Beacon dock this past winter, with bus service now in place for commuters and travelers alike to reach the train station on the other side of the river. Local residents and their elected officials and representatives have gathered over the past month of July to advocate for a reconsideration of the decision on the discontinuation. The City of Newburgh held a rally to Save the Ferry on July 8 at their dock along Water Street and in recent weeks, Beacon held its own rally on July 29, calling for the ferry to be brought back. On Wednesday, July 30, the MTA hosted a public session for people to comment further on the issue. Several area residents, some wearing Save The Ferry shirts, gave their testimony to the MTA on reinstating the service. The Orange County Legislature will hold its next session on Thursday, August 7 starting at 3:30 p.m. at the Orange County Government Center at 255 Main Street in Goshen. The resolution reads as follows: “Whereas, since 2005, the Newburgh-Beacon Ferry has served as a critical mode of transportation for residents of Orange and Dutchess Counties, connecting the City of Newburgh to the Metro-North Beacon Train Station and providing reliable access to jobs, education, healthcare, and essential services throughout the Hudson Valley and the greater New York City region; and Whereas, the ferry service has been a catalyst for regional economic growth by enhancing tourism, increasing foot traffic to local businesses, and supporting new development in the City of Newburgh and the surrounding communities; and Whereas, the City of Newburgh, a historic river community, has long relied on ferry service as an integral part of its transportation infrastructure and identity; and Whereas, the Newburgh-Beacon Ferry provides a scenic, efficient, and environmentally friendly commuting option that enhances the quality of life and attracts both residents and visitors; and Whereas, the City of Newburgh and Orange County has experienced a notable resurgence in recent years, with a wave of residential and commercial investment that underscores the growing need for improved and expanded transportation options, not reduced ones; and Whereas, providing and maintaining public transportation is a core function of government and critical to ensuring equitable access to opportunity and mobility for all citizens; and Whereas, the Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) has announced plans to terminate the Newburgh-Beacon Ferry service, citing the necessity for dock repairs and a decline in ridership since the COVID-19 pandemic, despite having taken little or no action to enhance or promote the ferry system's convenience, affordability, and visibility in the years since.” The resolution continues while criticizing the MTA: “Whereas, the MTA has failed to provide opportunities to grow ridership, such as implementing fare-free pilot programs, expanding service to weekends, increasing frequency and reliability, offering easier payments systems, expand routes, improving signage, and undertaking local marketing campaigns in Newburgh and Beacon; and Whereas, the decision to terminate the ferry service was made without seeking meaningful input or feedback from the impacted communities, elected officials, or local stakeholders; and Whereas, the ferry enjoys broad community support on both sides of the Hudson River and continues to be viewed as a key component of smart, sustainable, and equitable transportation planning.” The resolution concludes with the following sentiments from the county: “Now therefore, be it resolved, that the Orange County Legislature strongly opposes the termination of the Newburgh-Beacon Ferry service by the Metropolitan Transit Authority; and be it further resolved, that We, the Orange County Legislature, urge the MTA to immediately halt its plan to discontinue the ferry service and instead work with state officials, local municipalities, and community stakeholders to invest in the ferry's long-term future; and be it further resolved, that We, the Orange County Legislature, call on Governor Hochul, the New York State Department of Transportation, and the leadership of the MTA to allocate the funding necessary to make dock repairs, expand service, and implement a comprehensive strategy to increase ridership.” The legislature would be sending certified copies of the resolution to to New York State Governor Kathy Hochul, the MTA Board of Directors, the New York State Department of Transportation, the Chairpersons of the State Senate and Assembly Transportation Committees, to each New York State Senator and Assemblyperson who represents the Counties of Orange and Dutchess, the Dutchess County Legislature, and City of Beacon.

Orange County passes resolution in support of ferry Posted Wednesday, August 6, 2025 By Alberto Gilman The Orange County Legislature at their Ways and Means Committee meeting on Tuesday, July 29 approved a resolution in opposition of the decision to terminate the Newburgh-Beacon Ferry service. The Town of Newburgh recently passed a similar resolution opposing the decision. Orange County Legislator Kevindaryán Luján presented the resolution on Tuesday, extending his thanks to Legislative Chairman Kevin Hines for allowing it to be brought to the floor and legislative council for their assistance in drafting. The resolution presented continues the efforts by local leaders to oppose the decision by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA). The MTA announced it would be discontinuing the ferry following damage to the Beacon dock this past winter, with bus service now in place for commuters and travelers alike to reach the train station on the other side of the river. Local residents and their elected officials and representatives have gathered over the past month of July to advocate for a reconsideration of the decision on the discontinuation. The City of Newburgh held a rally to Save the Ferry on July 8 at their dock along Water Street and in recent weeks, Beacon held its own rally on July 29, calling for the ferry to be brought back. On Wednesday, July 30, the MTA hosted a public session for people to comment further on the issue. Several area residents, some wearing Save The Ferry shirts, gave their testimony to the MTA on reinstating the service. The Orange County Legislature will hold its next session on Thursday, August 7 starting at 3:30 p.m. at the Orange County Government Center at 255 Main Street in Goshen. The MTA's move to end the service has drawn sharp criticism from local residents, many of whom rely on the ferry to connect with the Metro-North Railroad. Without it, commuters must now use buses or drive to reach the Beacon train station — options that many argue are less accessible and more burdensome. During the public comment portion of the meeting, ferry supporters wore shirts bearing the slogan “Save The Ferry” alongside an image of the vessel. Among them was Oliver Meyer, a 15-year-old Beacon resident who uses the ferry daily to commute to his job at an ice cream shop in Newburgh. “I'm sad to see that it's being let go, but I'm here to fight for it,” Meyer said. “As someone under 18 with a job and no license, the ferry is hugely important to me. It helped make my first job possible.” Meyer added that the ferry's hours largely align with his work schedule but could be improved. He suggested that expanding service could help increase ridership and revenue, rather than eliminating the route entirely. Philippe Pierre, a Newburgh resident and organizer with the Save The Ferry group, noted that two recent rallies were held at the Newburgh and Beacon docks in opposition to the cancellation. He criticized the MTA's justification of low ridership and blamed outdated scheduling for the decline. “The schedule hasn't changed since 2005,” Pierre said. “It predates the financial crisis, the pandemic — even the iPhone. It needs to reflect how people commute in 2025.” After the initial public comment period ended, additional speakers were invited to continue speaking on a separate livestream. Among them was Naomi Hersson-Ringskog, who condemned the MTA's decision and its lack of public engagement. “The abrupt termination of the Newburgh-Beacon Ferry without public notice, warning or input cuts off a critical connection — not just for commuters but also for our economy,” she said. “Riders didn't fail the ferry. The ferry system failed the riders.” Mark Sanchez-Potter, a Newburgh resident and Bronx teacher who relies on Metro-North, also voiced his opposition. “This is a real travesty, and it needs to be corrected,” Sanchez-Potter said. “I ask this board to do the right thing — save the ferry and ensure equity for the residents of Beacon and Newburgh.”
