The governor is beginning to pivot from speeches focused on his record in Florida to his broader vision for the presidency.

“We’ve got the workers and the movers and shakers in these states,” said Sam Cooper, DeSantis campaign political director. “We’re running against Washington, not to be a part of Washington.”

His campaign is using these endorsements as a rebuttal to the perception they’re losing the endorsement battle to former President Donald Trump.

DeSantis is relying on a substance-heavy pitch to voters to help him stand out. Separating himself from Trump is still a challenge.

Newly filed documents show DeSantis’ campaign raised $20 million in the five weeks following his May 24 launch but spent $7.8 million.

The Florida governor, chasing Trump, spent nearly $8 million in the first weeks of his campaign.

Their defections — which started in the spring and have continued this summer — are disproportionately responsible for DeSantis’ overall decline.
