A civil rights lawsuit, as the state is threatening, would mount an unprecedented challenge for the nation’s most popular sports league.

Gov. Ron DeSantis and other top Republicans are ramping up pressure on the state House in hopes of spurring it into considering the AI bill of rights proposal.

The state House’s inaction, as the Senate teed up both medical freedom and AI legislation for later Tuesday, was quickly rebuked by Gov. Ron DeSantis, who labeled it as “typical political shenanigans.”

The possibilities in Florida include capping the cut agents can take from athletes, adding new registration requirements and even charging them a fee to prove they’re legitimate business representation.

The subpoenas allow Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier to keep pressure on the NFL after he previously gave the league a May 1 deadline to scrap the Rooney Rule and other diversity hiring protocols.

The Trump administration’s longstanding opposition to state AI laws ultimately killed legislation in Florida, and now Gov. Ron DeSantis fears policies in other states could fall by the wayside.

“The Republican Party has a choice to make — perhaps the defining choice of its next half century,” Sen. Josh Hawley wrote in an essay on AI.

State Attorney General James Uthmeier, who brought the lawsuit, said TikTok is liable to pay “potentially billons in damages” for allegedly deceiving parents and exposing children to harmful content on its app.

“Mark my words, we're going to go after anybody that's going to hurt our kids — anybody and everybody,” Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier said during an event Monday announcing the TikTok lawsuit.
