Morgan Stanley just released its first-quarter earnings, which showed a pickup in investment banking. Shares were up 2.7% in premarket trading. Investment banking revenue was up 16% from a year ago to $1.45 billion, boosted by stronger equity and debt underwriting.

Morgan Stanley is committed to its wealth management strategy, top executives said Tuesday, days after The Wall Street Journal reported that the unit is facing several regulatory probes. CEO Ted Pick said in his opening remarks on a conference call that the bank has been focused on "client onboarding and monitoring processes for a good while" and has been having "ongoing communications" with regulators "as all large banks do." The Journal reported last week that the division is being probed by multiple federal regulators, including the Securities and Exchange Commission, the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency and other Treasury Department offices, over how well it vets clients who are at risk of laundering money through this unit.

Morgan Stanley's CEO Ted Pick said that future investment banking volume is growing, laying out a case for why activity is likely to rise this year. "The pipeline is clearly growing...across sectors," Pick said on the bank's earnings call on Tuesday. “My bullishness is…a view that corporate boardrooms have been quiet for three, four years, and that is not sustainable," he said.

A Goldman Sachs shareholder proposal that sought to separate the bank's chairman and CEO positions failed to pass on Wednesday—even as it won more support among shareholders than last year. Of Goldman shares that were voted, 33% were in favor of splitting the positions held by David Solomon. A similar vote on Brian Moynihan’s dual roles at Bank of America won support from 31% of votes on Wednesday.
