It's a project they have been working on for the past 4 years, and now those day-long commutes, and hours in line to access a document should be a thing of the past. the ministry of E-governance in partnership with IDB, and the Attorney General's ministry have successfully launched the new civil registry and vital statistics system. Basically, you will now be able to apply for your birth certificate online. Here are the highlights from the launch today.
So effective March of 2026, agents and applicants will see the increase in fees at the vital stats unit. For some it might not be much but for others who are applying for multiple documents at a time, they might feel the sting in their pockets. But luckily once you get hold of your documents there will be no need to apply for it again once it is digitized.
And while the vital stats officer is the repository of the people's identity - it's also a business hub for the many agents who make their money by going through the hassle regular folks try to avoid. They make their money by obtaining documents - and are key stakeholders in the management of that officer.
And if there are fewer and fewer persons applying for their birth papers, marriage license and so forth, wouldn't it impact the revenues being collected at the VSU? The AG says yes but the PM still pushed for them to go through with the process.

In other news, the Belize Communication Workers for Justice have been clamoring for their retroactive interest on their severance going back to their date of termination. We asked the auditor general for his opinion on their demands and whether or not they are eligible to receive such payment.
