Looking at and studying birds teaches you about nature. I long ago realized that birding is all about learning, but not just about the birds. You find yourself wondering what kind of tree or shrub a particular bird seems to favor, and then you start wondering about all kinds of other nature-related things.
Now that we're in the second half of October, landscapes are finally showing color. But I have no idea how long the fall color will last because of the dry weather.

The yellow/orange leaves of Norway maples dominated the landscape on the way to see a rare hummingbird, all of the other deciduous trees bare except for Japanese maples in yards.
