You have to root for the people who strive so hard to make a go of racing in Northern California after Golden Gate Fields shut its doors for good June 9th. Racing has a rich history in Northern California and there are hundreds of people, from hotwalkers to grooms to trainers to breeders, and everybody in between, who depend on the sport to put food on the table. They deserve better than the uncertainty that has left most everyone worrying about their futures after The Stronach Group announced it was closing Golden Gate Fields, which had been operating since 1941.

Kyle Horlacher would prefer to steer the conversation to the horse he bred, trains and co-owns, the Pennsylvania-bred Shoshanah (Weigelia). She was aiming to give Horlacher his first stakes win in Monday's Power By Far Stakes at Parx. A five-time winner bred in Pennsylvania, she's a good story. According to a report by Kevin Modesti in the San Gabriel Valley Tribune, trainer David Hofmans died Wednesday at his home near Santa Anita. He was 81. When Storm the Court (Court Vision) won the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile in 2019, trainer and co-owner Peter Eurton tried to be realistic. The horse went off at 45-1 and that year's race was considered one of the weakest runnings of the Juvenile ever. He knew he didn't have a superstar on his hands, but he had every reason to believe that Storm the Court would at least be competitive in stakes company. Maybe he'd be a GIII Ohio Derby-type horse.
