If you're from my generation, you still remember every single scene from the legendary Rob Reiner's film The Princess Bride. One particularly memorable scene centered around whether a lifeless Westley (played by friend of Palmer Report Cary Elwes) was dead or merely mostly dead. It turned out he was merely mostly dead. Which is fortunate, because as Billy Crystal's character explained, if he was dead, there would be nothing to do but go through his pockets and look for loose change.

Donald Trump's economy, war, approval rating, presidency, health, and cognitive abilities are all in free fall. So what's he focused on? Naturally, trying to put his name on other people's buildings, and throwing a giant concert for himself. The thing is, he can't even get those things right.

Forgive me for beginning my morning column with a pop culture reference two days in a row, but we're at a stage where life is imitating art way too absurdly not to point it out. In the classic television show The West Wing, one staff member pranks the other by claiming there is a secret military defense mechanism beneath the White House. It ends with the line, “Did you think missiles were going to come flying out of the Rose Garden?” The upshot was, of course that it would be ludicrous to place a military target at the White House, thus making the White House more of a target.

From the beginning, Donald Trump has treated politics like it's a reality show. That is, of course, if the reality show in question was an apocalyptic nightmare landscape where the contestants keep putting an inept psychopath in charge and then instantly regret it each time, only to get eliminated because they can no longer afford groceries.

Yesterday Donald Trump showed everyone what he thinks is most important when he held up a poster comparing the length of the Washington DC reflecting pool to the height of random skyscrapers. When the reporters in the room showed Trump that they weren't impressed, he pouted and said rude things. Meanwhile, down the street from Trump and his little stunt, the Republican-controlled House made clear that its own priorities are no longer in line with those of Trump.
