The Penguins signed second-round draft pick Tomas Galvas to a three-year entry-level contract, the team announced. The 20-year-old from Czechia went undrafted in his first two years of eligibility and is listed at just 5 feet 10, 168 pounds. His size limited attraction early, but the Pens drafted him, and according to numerous reports, the skills he displayed at the prospect development camp in Cranberry Township last week, were very impressive.

The American League defeated the National League 6-1 Sunday in the MLB “Futures Game” played in Philadelphia. The Pirates top two prospects played in the game. #1 prospect Seth Hernandez pitched a 1-2-3 second inning with two strikeouts. Edward Florentino, who is a teammate to Hernandez at High-A Greensboro, scored the National League’s only run. The 19-year old was hit by a pitch. He stole second, then scored after consecutive ground outs in the third inning.

After a lengthy rain delay, Ryan Blaney won the Nascar Cup Series race in Atlanta early this morning in a three-way battle in overtime. Blaney, who started from the pole and won both stages of the race, led 171 laps. He held off Bubba Wallace and Christopher Bell at the finish. Wallace was later penalized for passing below the double yellow lines and was designated to a 29th place finish instead of second.

Butler high school had three former players selected in the MLB draft over the weekend. Pitcher Kyle Casteel, who just graduated, was taken by the Chicago White Sox in the 11th round. Two other former Butler pitchers were drafted along with Casteel. David Leslie was taken by the New York Yankees in the ninth round. He had played three seasons at Grove City before playing his senior season at Pitt. Madden Clement was selected by the Kansas City Royals in the 15th round. Clement was with Virginia Tech for three seasons, but had entered the transfer portal following this past season.

The Pittsburgh Pirates completed a three-game series sweep of the Milwaukee Brewers following a 14-5 victory Sunday at PNC Park. Paul Skenes won his second straight start after a 9-game winless slide. He allowed two runs on three hits while striking out seven. Skenes pitched into the sixth inning. Pirates manager Don Kelly pulled his star pitcher after he recorded the first out of the sixth after the Pirates had blown the game open with a 10-run fourth inning.
