Officials are warning attendees of Sail 250 Maryland and Air Show Baltimore about strict temporary flight restrictions and penalties for flying drones near the event. Starting Tuesday, ships from around the world will begin arriving at Baltimore's Inner Harbor and surrounding areas ahead of the event's kickoff on Wednesday. Tall ships and Navy vessels are set to fill the city's waterways and world-renowned military precision acrobatics teams are set to fill the city's skies."I think it's something that I haven't seen before, so I'd love to check it out and see that," said Luca Dorotovics, who lives in the Baltimore area."For me, I would like to see the air show," said Carl Cain, of Baltimore. While excitement builds, officials are urging attendees to leave their drones at home. Temporary flight restrictions will be in place from June 24-30 around the Inner Harbor, Fells Point, Locust Point, the Under Armour Pier, the Baltimore Peninsula and Martin State Airport."We are really only doing that to keep people safe," FBI-Baltimore Special Agent David Rodski told WBAL-TV 11 News.Rodski, who has confiscated drones at past events, warned that agents will act swiftly to seize drones and make arrests if anyone violates the restricted zones."If the drone drops and hits someone, you could hurt or kill someone, so that's the first thing. Second of all, it's against the law," Rodski told WBAL-TV 11 News. Thomas Sullivan, chief of the U.S. Attorney's Office National Security Cyber Crimes Section, detailed the potential consequences for violators."Just for flying a drone in the temporary restricted area, they are facing a penalty of up to a year in prison, a $10,000 fine and forfeiture of their drone," Sullivan told WBAL-TV 11 News. "If that endangers flight safety and causes injury, it could be 10 years or up to life and a fine of up to $250,000 and forfeiture of their drone." Master Chief Petty Officer Geoffrey Gall, with the U.S. Coast Guard Maritime Security Response Team East, shared his experience from Sail 250 in New Orleans, where more than 90 violations of the temporary flight restriction zone occurred.Gall said his team has sensors throughout Baltimore to detect violators, especially since Baltimore is the only city hosting an air show as part of Sail 250."If you operate and don't know and are trying to fly too close to that, we are going to actually have to stop the air show. So, one person can really get in the way and ruin that," Gall told WBAL-TV 11 News. As attendees prepare to enjoy the festivities, officials are urging everyone to follow the rules to ensure a safe and successful event.
