Prior to the regular Coronado City Council meeting on June 2, a brief special meeting was held for the purposes of a standard review of the Brown Act. The Ralph M. Brown Act was established in California in 1953, authored by Assemblymember Ralph Brown, to guarantee the public’s right to attend and participate in meetings by local legislative bodies in the state. At the time, the law was created in response to public concerns around undisclosed meetings held by elected officials at the local level. In recent years, there has been legal discussion and updates to the Brown Act in the age of social media use and how it also applies to online communication.

Recent Coronado High School and Coronado School of the Arts (CoSA) graduate Addison Nesbitt was one of two San Diego students to win the Broadway San Diego Awards and advance to the Jimmy Awards competition in New York City. Nesbitt recently won Best Actress at the Broadway San Diego Awards, moving on to be recognized as a Showstopper Awardee at the national Jimmy Awards for musical theater in New York City.

Longtime software developer and Coronado native Clay Shinn recently released a free app called “Explore Coronado” to help locals and visitors to the island stay up to date with what’s going on in Coronado.

On July 16, the Coronado Historical Association (CHA) officially opened “The Moments That Made US,” the newest exhibit curated by CHA’s staff and which is free to the public. “The Moments That Made US” ties into the wider theme of historical celebrations this year with the country’s 250th anniversary. After extensive discussions over the past few years about Community Choice Aggregation (CCA) for the purposes of providing an alternative energy program option to SDG&E for Coronado residents and businesses, the Coronado City Council made the unanimous decision to move forward with membership in San Diego Community Power (SDCP) at the July 21 city council meeting. This decision follows their decision in February to initiate a member application for SDCP, as had been recommended by the City’s Community Choice Aggregation Subcommittee, who also worked with the Energy Policy Initiative Center to establish a comparison between SDCP and the Clean Energy Alliance (another local CCA).

Like all local and state governmental bodies in California, the City of Coronado maintains public records of all writings that relate to public business and adheres to the California Public Records Act (CPRA). CPRA was originally passed by California lawmakers in 1968, requiring that all government agencies (and commissions, committees, boards, and departments therein) make government records available to the public upon request. The only exception to this law pertains to records where a privacy or public safety exemption applies.

With the new dog run fence up and officially completed at the Cays Park, dog owners and park users alike seem to be enjoying the finished design. I stopped by to talk to dog owners about the new setup, who shared positive sentiments overall about the fence.
