The Coronado City Council meeting on May 5 saw the Council discuss a variety of items, beginning with a recognition of May 2026 as Mental Health and Wellness Month, in partnership with Safe Harbor Coronado. They also provided a proclamation for the week of May 3 to May 9, 2026, as Public Service Recognition Week in Coronado, thanking the City’s staff for providing a wide variety of services and for their stewardship of the community.

With two Coronado City Council seats up for election this year, I had the chance to discuss what being a council member in Coronado typically entails with Councilmember Carrie Downey, who is currently serving on the council for the fourth time.

The sounds of the Coronado Promenade Concerts-in-the-Park are the official sound track of summer in Spreckels Park. This past Sunday members of the Coronado City Council and the Promenade Concerts Board of Directors kicked-off the 2026 edition of the local tradition. Come on out on Sunday evenings and enjoy the free concerts.

Daniell-Elizabeth Mensah-Baah began her freshman year at Coronado High School with a big goal – to start something new and provide CHS students with a unique opportunity to share their stories. “I wanted to become more involved in the community, especially as someone who doesn’t live on the island and transferred through CoSA, and I wanted to do something that would bring people together,” Mensah-Baah said of deciding to start TEDx Inspired as a club at the high school.

On Friday, May 22, a brand new art mural was officially unveiled on Silver Strand Elementary School’s campus at their annual Luau fundraiser event. The mural is a project that began during the COVID-19 pandemic and consists of a number of tiles featuring drawings from Silver Strand students and families arranged around the message, “We are all in this together.”

As the Coronado High School (CHS) Class of 2026 prepared for their recent graduation, Leo Salata was named this year’s recipient of the Jike Wong Award at the CHS Senior Awards ceremony.

At the regular Coronado City Council meeting on June 2, Mayor John Duncan began with the reading of a proclamation celebrating the Coronado High School Girls Lacrosse team and their recent back-to-back CIF Open Division wins and national ranking.

On Monday, June 8th, Team Reaume Racing announced its signing of 2017 Coronado High School graduate Austin Varco to race in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series. His debut with Team Reaume, and racing on the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series in the No. 22 Ford 150, will take place on June 19th in Coronado as part of the San Diego Street Race weekend.

In November of 2024, under the recommendation of Coronado’s Fire Services department and Fire Chief Jayson Summers, the Coronado City Council approved funding for the acquisition of a new, electric fire engine. Earlier this month, the City hosted a commissioning ceremony celebrating the arrival of the new Rosenbauer RTX service vehicle and its official debut within the City’s fleet.
