After extensive discussions over the past few years about Community Choice Aggregation (CCA) for the purposes of providing an alternative energy program option to SDG&E for Coronado residents and businesses, the Coronado City Council made the unanimous decision to move forward with membership in San Diego Community Power (SDCP) at the July 21 city council meeting. This decision follows their decision in February to initiate a member application for SDCP, as had been recommended by the City’s Community Choice Aggregation Subcommittee, who also worked with the Energy Policy Initiative Center to establish a comparison between SDCP and the Clean Energy Alliance (another local CCA).

Like all local and state governmental bodies in California, the City of Coronado maintains public records of all writings that relate to public business and adheres to the California Public Records Act (CPRA). CPRA was originally passed by California lawmakers in 1968, requiring that all government agencies (and commissions, committees, boards, and departments therein) make government records available to the public upon request. The only exception to this law pertains to records where a privacy or public safety exemption applies.

With the new dog run fence up and officially completed at the Cays Park, dog owners and park users alike seem to be enjoying the finished design. I stopped by to talk to dog owners about the new setup, who shared positive sentiments overall about the fence.

The Coronado Cays Yacht Club (CCYC) recently organized an event to assemble packages for active-duty military members currently deployed abroad. Connie Peacock, the current Rear Commodore of CCYC, has been hosting similar events for 25 years, starting with her ski club when she was living in Orange County.

The Coronado Public Library recently hosted an event in the Winn Room recognizing four Coronado centenarians. “100 Years! A Celebration of Marvelous Lives” invited Bill Hiscock (101), Wilma Jean (Johnson) Mack (101), Peggy Price (103), and Walt Travis (102) to discuss their experiences, reflect on their histories, and share their thoughts on life after 100.

The Coronado Chamber of Commerce and Discover Coronado are partnering to bring an information hub to the city to provide a new resource for the community. This hub is intended to be for everyone (residents, visitors, businesses, etc.) while also providing both organizations with a brick-and-mortar presence on the island.

The Coronado Cultural Arts Commission works to support and empower Coronado’s Arts Partners, as well as maintain the City’s public art and facilitate visual arts collections and arts-related events throughout the year. Dawn Richards is the current Cultural Arts Commission Chair and is leading the way with the rest of the commission to reach for new goals in their overarching mission to support arts within the community.

English Mastiff, Sir Winston, received his proclamation (presented by Coronado Mayor, John Duncan) celebrating his status as the 2026 Animal Mayor of Coronado. This year’s Animal Mayor program helped to raise over $45,000 for PAWS and their animal care operations.

Merridee Book, CEO and Artistic Director of the Coronado Island Film Festival, recently also became an Executive Advisor on the World NGO Day Global Council. World NGO Day is a day of global awareness and celebration of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and nonprofits, and the humanitarian work they do, held every year on February 27.
