The BYU football program heads into the 2026 season as one of the favorites to win the Big 12. While BYU returns a lot of experience at most positions, one positions that will feature a lot is new faces is wide receiver.

After months without new additions to the roster, Kevin Young and the BYU basketball program added Lithuanian combo guard Dovydas Buika on Wednesday. With Buika on board, BYU still has multiple roster spots to fill for the 2026-2027 season.

It's almost always an uphill battle for a true freshman to play right away at the Power Four level. However, seemingly every season at BYU, there is a freshman that overcomes the odds make an imemediate impact. In 2025, it was quarterback Bear Bachmeier and defensive end Nusi Taumoepeau. In 2024, it was safety Faletau Satuala. In 2023, it was LJ Martin.

We are almost halfway through the month of July. At this point on the college football calendar, the attention turns from the recruiting trail to the upcoming season. Over the last month, BYU has built the foundation of its 2026 class. The Cougars hosted more than a dozen official visitors on campus last month, and most of those visitors have announced their college choices.

BYU's 2024 Fall Camp was dominated by the quarterback battle between Jake Retzlaff and Gerry Bohannon. During 2025 Fall Camp, all eyes were on the quarterback battle between Bear Bachmeier, McCae Hillstead, and Treyson Bourguet. For the first time since 2023, BYU goes into Fall Camp with a clear starter under center in Bear Bachmeier.

Bronco Mendenhall took over as head coach of the BYU football program before the 2005 season. Mendenhall's tenure in Provo ended in 2015 when he took the head coaching job at Virginia. Years later, Mendenhall is back in Utah as the head coach for the Utah State Aggies.

BYU Fall Camp is just around the corner. As the Cougars kickoff Fall Camp, returning production will be the theme at most positions. The position group that returns the least production - and has the most questions to answer heading into Fall Camp - is the wide receivers.
