In the days of yesteryear, people would flock to video arcades, local convenience stores and pizzerias in order to dump quarters into their favourite games. Back then, video games were made more difficult on purpose in order to make money, which is a tactic that continued into home consoles. This was partially due to the rental market, as well, and is why people often say that games have gotten easier over the years.

Although I try to keep abreast of what’s coming down the pipeline, there are always surprises — both pleasant and unpleasant. One release that recently surprised me was Welcome to Kowloon — a horror experience that isn’t for the faint of heart. Going in, I didn’t know what to expect, and am still thinking about it hours later.

My most formative years were lived during the heyday of the 2D and 3D platformer. I can’t count the hours I ‘lost’ to games like Super Mario Bros., Super Mario World, Banjo-Kazooie, Super Mario 64 and Rayman. Now, it seems like those genres are having a resurgence, decades later and on varied consoles.

Although one particular horror movie scared the absolute shit out of me as a kid, I regrouped and came back to them a year or two later. I was definitely too young for them, at the time, but I grew up watching classic horror movies from the 70s and 80s, and even some from before. This developed into an affinity for slashers, like Halloween, A Nightmare on Elm Street, Sleepaway Camp, April Fool’s Day and Friday the 13th. That said, the original Black Christmas is my favourite.
