Detroit fans are very intelligent. I don’t know if that many tiger people came to the defense of Framber Valdez last night. It really was an ugly moment. It was bad enough that the Tigers really needed Valdez to go out and pitch some good baseball, and he ended up having one of the worst starts of his career. But teams lose games every day, for Valdez to go out of his way to put Detroit at the center of a whole lot of controversy made things even weaker.

I wish that I could blame the injuries. But this team has no one to blame but themselves this evening. I’m not going to act like there weren’t moments in this game in which Jack Flaherty started to lose his command, but as a whole, that’s a step in the right direction for Jack. This team did not lose tonight's game because of the devastating number of pitching injuries they’ve suffered. You even have an off day tomorrow, which is essentially a free space. You could’ve used this bullpen however you wanted it. It wasn’t the pitching tonight.
It feels like the gut-punch losses are starting to pile on top of one another. You know how, when a hitter is struggling, we often say that they might just need to see one ball go over the fence to get their confidence back? This is how I feel about the Tigers right now. They need to find a way to secure a W so they know they can do it again, because right now it feels like a team just waiting for bad things to happen. I’m almost at a loss for words. It’s truly shocking just how awful they look right now. Michael Wacha is a fine pitcher; in fact, he said he's had a bit of a career resurgence over the last several seasons. I gotta give him a lot of credit because he was one of those guys that really seemed like he was going through it for a while after starting his career off hot. He’s a very well-respected veteran presence, but he’s not a Cy Young caliber guy, except for when he pitches against Detroit.

So it was Gage Workman saving the Tigers' season in the middle of May. I don’t think anyone had that on their bingo card. The former 2020 Tigers draft pick, who was picked up by the Cubs as a rule five pick before ultimately being sent back to the Tigers organization, made his Detroit debut tonight and didn’t waste it. It came off the bench and broke a 3-3 tie with a two-run home run in the sixth inning.

Everyone is mad right now. I totally understand it. I’m not going to tell people they shouldn’t be mad. And we’re out for blood, looking for people to point fingers at. I’m not usually a guy who likes to use terms like "must win" during the baseball season. Obviously, if it’s a win-or-go-home game, I understand, but I’ve seen a lot of baseball teams lose games that their fan base deemed must-win, and they ended up just fine. With that said, the way this game was playing out, it felt like if Detroit wasn’t going to win this one, it might be a long time before they won another game.
The Tarik Skubal injury is undeniably devastating. It’s brutal to lose your ace at any point during a season, and I would argue from a morale standpoint. It’s affected this team even more. Tarik is a guy who’s always going to bring a lot of energy and enthusiasm, which are two things that we haven’t seen from this team in weeks.
