The 2026 World Cup looms, and the most countries in history will be participating in this year's tournament. There will be 48 teams in the mix over the summer months of 2026, with one nation emerging as the champions of men’s football/soccer.

The 2026 World Cup will be expansive. There are three host nations, and for the first time a whopping 48 teams. It’s all leading up to July 19, when two teams will compete on the outskirts of New York City in the home of the Jets and Giants for a chance to be the international champions of men’s soccer.

In 1994, the United States hosted the World Cup. It was a significant moment in soccer as a whole, but huge for American soccer. The U.S. was not a footballing nation by and large at that point, and also it doesn’t even call the sport football.

The 2026 World Cup is the first to feature 48 nations. That’s a lot of teams! If not for the increase in 16 nations, we may not have gotten debutantes like Uzbekistan and Cape Verde, or the returns of Haiti or the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
