Although gridded datasets provide insights into snow–soil interactions, they often fail to capture localized variability, particularly in complex terrain. Field observations are needed to represent spatial heterogeneity in land surface models. This study evaluated soil temperature and moisture dynamics, freeze–thaw transitions, and snowpack characteristics across varying elevations by comparing field observations from the Snake Range in the Great Basin, USA, against three reanalysis and data assimilation gridded products: Western Land Data Assimilation System (WLDAS), CONUS404, USAF 557th Weather Wing (557WW), and a downscaled soil moisture dataset—GeoWATCH. The results of this study showed that WLDAS (1 km resolution) consistently demonstrates the highest accuracy in modeling soil temperature and moisture. GeoWATCH (30 m) performed better for soil moisture in summer and fall, while CONUS404 (4 km) more effectively captured precipitation and air temperature, and 557WW (25 km) captured better the soil frost start date. Based on the observations, shallow snowpacks (<0.20 m) led to a more closely coupled relationship between air and soil temperatures and greater soil freezing depths at cold temperatures due to reduced insulation. With every 400 m increase in elevation, the field capacity period was delayed almost one month, starting in January at low elevations and ending in late May at high elevations. Cold soil temperature biases were more pronounced in dry years. This is because models underestimate snow depth, leading to reduced snow insulation, overestimated frost depths, earlier freezing onset, and prolonged frozen periods compared to field observations. Therefore, models that can more accurately represent shallow snowpacks during dry years and ephemeral snowpacks at low elevations are needed.
