The 1,600-bed prison in Appleton, Minnesota is expected to open this fall. Contractors started repairs on the facility last year.

The sale was announced one day after the private prison said the 1,600-bed facility would reopen. The small town relies on property taxes from the facility for much of its budget, however, federal prisons are typically tax exempt.

A day after CoreCivic announced it was reopening the long-shuttered private prison it owns in Appleton, Minn., the company said it was selling the facility to the federal government for almost half a billion dollars.

The Trump administration warned Hennepin County Sheriff Dawanna Witt that failure to provide ICE agents access to inmates could result in criminal charges.

The office said Sheriff Dawanna Witt received immigration subpoenas over a failure to give access to inmates for deportation.
