For Derby High School bowling coach Ryker Percival, summer has been anything but quiet.

For Derby High School graduate Diego Gauna, his college career has centered around perseverance. After battling multiple injuries during the first two years of his college wrestling career, Gauna is looking to turn his resilience into results as he prepares for his final season at Labette Community College.

Derby hosted its annual National Night Out event at High Park on Aug. 4. It was the first time the event was held at the remodeled area at High Park. The event serves as a way for the community to continue to build positive relationships with local first responders. Individuals from the Derby Police and Fire Departments, Derby Public Works and McConnell Air Force Base had booths, interactive demonstrations and vehicles on display. The Derby Police Department offered an obstacle course. The DPD also had a “Dunk the Chief” dunk tank available.

Jack Trainer entered the summer with one goal: simplify everything. Trainer admitted last spring did not unfold the way he envisioned offensively, but it motivated him to return to the approach that had always made him successful. The result was a summer that rebuilt his confidence and has him optimistic heading into his final season with the Panthers.

A new program is taking shape at Derby High School this summer, and even before the inaugural season begins, interest has been high. While girls flag football is new to the Panthers, a familiar face will be on the sidelines.

When Chloe Thrailkill unlocked the door to her fifth grade classroom at Park Hill Elementary, the moment felt like both a beginning and a homecoming. The 2019 Derby High School graduate and Derby Hills Elementary alum returned to Derby Public Schools to launch her first year as the lead teacher in her own classroom.

The Derby Recreation Center indoor aquatic center pool remodel is starting to take shape and is expected to be completed in early September.
