But Bloomington has a separate company, New Horizons Orchestra — for grownups. Its parent organization was strummed up in 1991 at the prestigious Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York. Today more than 100 subgroups exist, with one in Bloomington. Any level of experience is welcome. Rehearsals for the Bloomington group's fall session start Sept. 7 and run for 14 weeks. Tom Slater at age eight heard his father refer to him as “queer.” So the little boy would squeeze his pinky finger to toughen it up. “I later became a man that was an asshole,” Slater said on the phone. “I was shielding myself.” Drag artist and world-champion ballroom dancer (among other talents), Slater has been planning his musical life story for five years. “Always a Little Bit Tipsy” is about to be enjoyed Sept. 18-27 at the Waldron Firebay, produced by After the Storm Productions and YOUnique Studio, the latter of which Slater co-owns.
