The government has dropped plans to make solar panels mandatory on new car parks, sparking criticism from the industry and campaigners. In a consultation, published nearly a year ago, the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) set out a proposal to mandate canopies fitted with solar panels on new outdoor car parks and hailed the potential contribution that the vast, under-utilised surface area could make to the UK’s renewable energy generation capacity. But it will now not follow through on these plans.
