Feb. 24—WORTHINGTON — There were no surprises at the South Section 3A quarterfinals girls basketball tournament this Saturday at the Worthington High School gymnasium.

"I told the girls the next time we play (Fairmont) it's going to be a championship game. "

The Patriots, who won 50-39 over MCC will play the Knights, winners over SWC, Saturday on the SMSU campus in Marshall for the south sub-section championship.

The Trojans were up for the moment in a 2-1 win over Windom Area. Senior ace Tucker Brandner was effective and efficient, while shortstop Emanuel Saravia was electric on the basepath scoring twice.

The Toros' woes started early on Wednesday, as the Blackhawks capitalized twice in the opening four minutes on WCFC errors to take a 2-0 lead, en route to their 7-1 victory.

Austin Gruis, who finished his freshman year at WHS and played catcher on the varsity team, was a steadfast bat for the Legion team. He went 3-for-4 with a triple, double and an RBI single

“Everybody was hungry today. They really want to win and you see that. They didn’t care what position they were playing."

Logan Kerkaert pitched six fine innings with 10 strikeouts for Worthington, but was not able to match a complete game gem tossed by Edgerton's Josh Van Dam.

Worthington’s third game is to be played at 6 p.m. tonight against the Rochester A’s. Worthington’s Sunday opponent is to be determined.
