CORDOVA - The Cordova Town Council discussed the problem of dogs at a particular residence at its June 11 meeting, with officials indicating that police and animal control are continuing

The Town of Nauvoo is disposing of surplus items at the old Nauvoo Jr. High School and the old First Baptist Church that are to be demolished. Bricks from the school, seen here, will be sold by a club as souvenirs, while the town will also use some bricks for a memorial to remember the school.

The Walker County Amateur Radio Emergency Services (ARES) hosted its annual Field Day on Saturday, June 22, at the Walker County Lake in Jasper. The public was allowed to ask questions about ham radios and GOTA (get on the air) radios that allow non-licensed people to try their hand at using a ham radio. Richard Clouse currently serves as president of ARES, which meets the second Saturday of each month at 8 a.m. at the American Red Cross building at 1101 Viking Dr. in Jasper. The Cordova Police Department is offering to collect information from next of kin about elderly people who may need help at times.

The new business incubator is now under construction in downtown Cordova, across the way from the Town Hall. This was taken on Saturday, June 29, as visitors came for the Independence Day event. Work was expected to begin around mid-July.

The Sumiton Walmart (WM 2723) had a ribbon-cutting on Friday, July 5, for its new redesign, hosted by store manager Derek Freeman. The store, which employs 250 employees, handed out a $2,000 grant to Backyard Blessings and $1,000 grants to the Boy Scouts of America, Cordova Troop 114 (which presented the colors); Sumiton Police Department; and East Walker Education and Development. The event featured giveaways, honored longtime employees and offered a Coca-Cola machine that could be "hugged" to trigger canned drinks to come out for free.
