Saturday was the final day of the District 3 Track and Field Championships at Shippensburg University, and area athletes were busy all around the facility at Seth Grove Stadium. Some of the expected characters did what was expected of them, some didn't quite reach their goals, and others came through in the clutch with lifetime best performances. It was quite a meet.

Well, the beat goes on. Day after day. My wife and I just spent two weeks in some of the grandest national parks one could ever find. We returned to hear of a major threat to their very existence, which has frustrated and angered those of us who look to our incredible, beautiful open spaces for solace, contemplation, escape, and amazement.

The year I graduated from college, I took off to a wilderness camp in Vermont. Fresh with a college degree, excited about ending a significant life chapter, and eagerly anticipating marriage to the love of my life, I just went. Selfishly perhaps, but necessarily important. It was something I needed to do, and as it turns out, it greatly shaped my life and outlook on things, even today, nearly 50 years later.

Someday, I won't be able to hike anymore. Let's face it, I have many more steps behind me than I do ahead of me. But I'm not the only one. All of us, even those who feel invincible and ageless, are eventually going to have to stop doing those things that bring us joy. The key is to embrace it.
