(FILE) The City of Harrisburg's Public Works Director, Dave West, said it consistency of the storm eventually starts to wear crews down. He said his team is currently working 12 to 16 hour shifts during winter weather events. "It eventually starts to wear you down," said West. Fritzi Schreffler, a spokesperson for PennDOT, echoed the sentiment, noting the challenges faced by crews working long hours. "Back to back to back gets a little wearing on you, especially when our guys are doing 12-hour shifts," she said. The primary challenge this year has been the ice, rather than snow accumulation. "We've had so much ice. Snow is a different thing; we can put the plows down and get rid of that. Ice is a little more challenging," Schreffler said. West noted that the current temperatures, hovering just below freezing, have allowed crews to break up the ice with iron plows. "If it was 18 to 20, it would be a massive problem, we couldn't get the ice up. Because it's 30, 31 just barely below freezing, with our iron plows, we can break the ice up and that's what we've been fortunate to do," he said. The frequency of storms is also taking a toll on equipment. "During a storm, it is not just our operators that are out. We actually have mechanics, we have welders. There are a variety of people who are in the garages because our trucks do go down," Schreffler said. In Harrisburg, there is a contingency plan if additional manpower is needed. "We also have a sanitation department as well, which we have more equipment operators. If we need to move into a phase two, we'll use operators for that and back the trash up because we can always catch up on the trash. We have to deal with the hazard at hand," West said. Despite the challenges, West expressed confidence in his team. "We do what we do and we do it well. We love our city, so we're up for the challenge," he said. Both PennDOT and city crews advise residents to prepare for the worst by keeping extra blankets, snacks, and a charged phone in their vehicles. Spotlight on Female Athletes | Lancaster Catholic discus thrower is 'once in a generation' by Elise Person Wed, February 19th 2025 at 2:41 PM Margaret Bila, a standout discus thrower from Lancaster Catholic, has quickly risen to prominence in the world of high school athletics. (Nate Leonard) LANCASTER, Pa. — "My freshman year I had intended to do hurdles," said Bila. "But I wasn't very good at running, so my head coach said I should be a thrower instead." Taking her coach's advice, Bila picked up a discus for the first time. Now, that coach says she's a "once in a generation" talent. "My first measured throw was 45 feet, which is 105 feet less than I throw now," Bila said. Just two years later, her dedication and skill culminated in a remarkable 140-foot throw, earning her a gold medal at the PIAA State Championship and capping off an outstanding junior season. "The success she's had in such a short time is pretty incredible," said Nate Leonard, Bila's coach. "I say this all the time, but I don't think she's even scratched the surface yet of what she's capable of." Leonard said Bila is constantly putting in extra work to become the best in her sport. "She'll really put in that extra time. She's there first, she stays till the end," Leonard said. "I'm certainly a better coach for having coached her." As she prepares for her senior season, Bila's ambitions have only grown. "I think the only way to go is two-time, two-time state champ," she said. Looking ahead, Bila is set to continue her athletic career at the University of Pittsburgh. However, she said she's focused on achieving her goals at Lancaster Catholic before moving on to collegiate competition.

'This is not OK': Rally in Lancaster County demands justice for puppies by Elise Person Fri, March 7th 2025 at 11:34 PM Rally in Lancaster County demands justice for puppies (CBS 21) LANCASTER, Pa. — The demonstrators called for the maximum sentence for Stoltzfus, who is accused of killing four puppies after they failed to sell. Grace Froelich with Animal Rescue Inc. was rallying for the maximum sentence. She said the larger issue is that many people are unaware of the fact that puppies are killed at puppy mills frequently. "This is not unusual," Froelich said. The rally coincided with what was supposed to be a court hearing for Stoltzfus, but the status conference was continued. Despite the delay, the community remains determined to see justice served. "We'll continue to band together and show up," Froelich said. Kathy Anderson, who runs Timber Ridge Animal Sanctuary, expressed hope that a strong sentence would send a message to other breeders. "Hoping to get some jail time and then this will teach a lot of the other Amish puppy mills that this is not OK and this can't continue to happen," she said. Anderson, who rescues animals from puppy mills, became emotional as she spoke about the conditions these animals endure. "We just need to get an end to the Amish breeders for killing all these animals and it continues every day," she said. The date for Stoltzfus's next court appearance has not been announced, but the community remains vigilant in their pursuit of justice.

LANCASTER COUNTY, Pa. — Many neighbors said they didn't hear the crash itself, but were alerted by the commotion that followed. "There's just so many sounds and whistles and sirens and noise and vehicles coming in," said Joyce Nelson, a Brethren Village resident. Janice Wenger, another resident, said the sirens are what caught her attention Sunday afternoon. "I didn't hear the impact of the plane but all of a sudden there was an ambulance rushing by my patio. I came outside and this whole street was filled with police cars and they were here in a matter of seconds," Wenger said. Photos taken shortly after the crash showed the plane resting on top of cars, with smoke billowing into the air. Despite the dramatic scene, residents were relieved that the plane did not crash into any buildings. "There were vehicles on fire and we saw people on stretchers going out. I think that we're blessed that it did not go into a building," said Nelson. Brethren Village issued a statement saying, the following: Residents were promptly informed of the incident and, out of an abundance of caution, were briefly directed to shelter in place. At no time were residents in danger. Many residents expressed gratitude for the quick response and communication from Brethren Village. As the investigation continues, residents remain thankful for their safety. "Fortunately it didn't go into a building. It was so close so I think we were blessed that nothing happened," said Nelson. "We feel like someone was looking out for us yesterday," said Wenger. Residents are hopeful that their peaceful and quiet community will soon return to normal once the investigation concludes.

Residents of Brethren Village, a community for those ages 62 and up in Manheim Township, were taken by surprise when a plane crashed just outside their homes on Sunday.
