Wet Mountain Valley Outdoors (WMVO) held its first community meeting at Lange Hall on August 6. A crowd of about 100 people showed up for the kickoff of the WMVO community engagement process to learn about how this process will work, what will make it effective, and to brainstorm some initial ideas for a community vision of what is valuable and worth preserving and improving about the culture, environment, and economy of the Wet Mountain Valley.

The Westcliffe Board of Trustees (BOT) held its regular meeting on July 15. Under Old Business, the BOT considered and approved a motion to re-zone a lot in the Shadow Ridge subdivision from highway commercial to single-family residential.
The Board of the West Custer County Hospital District (WCCHD) held a regular meeting on July 31. After a presentation from parent organization Heart of the Rockies Regional Medical Center (HRRMC) about renovations at HRRMC’s hospital and clinic complex in Salida, the Board heard a report from Emergency Medical Services (EMS), a facilities update for the Custer County clinic, and finally, a presentation from consultant Mary Callan on next steps in the WCCHD’s Senior Health Project.

The Westcliffe Board of Trustees (BOT) held their regular meeting on August 19. On the agenda, under Old Business, was consideration of the Alta Convenience Store’s modification of premises for their beer cave, an item that had been tabled from the July meeting, pending advice from the town’s new attorney. “Alta has met all the requirements from the state for the license,” said Mayor Paul Wenke, addressing Town Attorney Dan Findlay: “What authority does the Town Board have to approve or deny the request?”
