COLUMBUS, Ohio — As families continue to mourn the five adults who died in the Scioto River earlier this week, some people who spend time along the river every day say more can be done to help prevent another tragedy.

Water safety experts say rivers can be especially dangerous because of strong currents, changing water levels and underwater hazards that can quickly overwhelm even experienced swimmers.

The expiration means some Haitian TPS holders could lose legal protections from deportation provided by the program, and that their employment authorization tied to TPS will also expire, unless they have another lawful immigration status or receive additional legal relief. Advocates say additional legal filings could still come in the weeks ahead.

Despite legal challenges that continue, advocates in Springfield say it’s leaving many people facing an uncertain future.
