About fifty people braved the punishing heat yesterday afternoon for a picket line outside Hilton Madison Monona Terrace. A majority of the hotel workers voted last August to join UNITE HERE Local 1, a union that represents hospitality workers in Wisconsin, Illinois, and Indiana.

Madison police shot and killed Corey Ruiz on Wednesday, at the busy intersection of Williamson and Baldwin streets. Officers responded to a call just before 1 p.m. reporting that a man was checking parked vehicles. He fled on a bike and, according to Madison Police Chief John Patterson, produced a knife after a short pursuit and physical struggle. Four officers, including the officer who pulled the trigger, have been placed on administrative leave.
