With less than five weeks until I start the Pacific Crest Trail, I have been dialing in my base weight*, practicing setting up my tent, and packing my backpack. When I started the Appalachian Trail in February of 2021, my base weight was 23 lbs, and my backpack weighed 40 lbs at Springer Mountain with food and water. Although I shed some pack weight throughout my AT thru-hike, my base weight was still around 19 lbs when I finished. As I dial in my gear for the PCT, my base weight is around 13 lbs, 10 lbs lighter than when I started the AT. In this post, I will discuss reasons for the gear changes I have made over the last 3 years to lower my base weight and make my (almost) ultralight dreams come true.

It's done! My first week on the Pacific Crest Trail. After months (and years) of anticipation, I have finally started my journey. As I left the southern terminus the feelings were overwhelming: excitement, nervousness, happiness. But one overpowered them all: complete serenity. Serenity that I will get to spend the next five months of my life doing what brings me joy and being where I feel most at home within myself.

After a double zero waiting out a storm in Julian, I was antsy to get back on trail. When we finally got back to trail after a road walk and hitch to scissors crossing, I was practically running up the mountain out of pure joy. It felt so good to be back to crushing miles.

Trail life has become my new normal. Waking up and boiling water for my oatmeal while still in my quilt, filtering water just to be able to drink it, and blowing up my pad before bed (and re-inflating it multiple times a night) have all become part of my routine. Walking for hours without taking a break, eating pieces of dirt in all my meals (trail spice!), and falling asleep to the sound of the wind feel so normal.

Whenever I pass a day hiker they ask “are you hiking all the way to Canada?” I always respond “that's the plan!” The trail requires flexibility. By saying “that's the plan” I try to embrace the unknown. Sometimes, plans don't go accordingly. A water source is unexpectedly dry, I have extra energy and hike further than I had planned, I get trail magic at a road crossing and sit there longer than I had anticipated. I can plan resupply boxes down to the last tuna packet, and make a spreadsheet of daily mileage in order to get to Canada before school starts in the fall. But ultimately, the trail will throw obstacles along the way, and without flexibility I will not make it.
