Fred Alger Management rolled out two new exchange-traded funds on Friday, bringing its ETF family to five funds. Unlike the rest of the firm’s entirely actively managed lineup, these newest additions are fully transparent.
During the week, a total of 16 new ETFs debuted on the U.S. markets. These included launches from AllianzIM, ProShares, Split Rock Trading, River1 Asset Management, Rayliant, Strategas, and Alger. However, other firms also rolled out new funds.

The week ending April 12, 2024 saw the launch of a total of 10 new ETFs, including three funds from Fidelity that implement options strategies. There were also launches from Westwood Holdings, Obra Capital, and Strive Asset Management, among other issuers.
For those ready to make the retirement plunge, it’s essential they see their financial plan as a “living, breathing” one. That way it can accommodate market changes or other life fluctuations. They should also make sure to spread their nest egg across a diversified portfolio of accounts with varied tax liabilities, advisors shared.
For the second week in a row, launches of new ETFs have been sluggish, to say the least. Granted, the five launches that took place this past week were more than the two that launched in the week ended April 19. The Passover holiday was likely a contributing factor to this slowdown. However, unlike last week, there was quite a bit of activity, especially around closures, which include one of the shortest fund life spans seen in the ETF industry.
Inflation and interest rate hikes have not been kind to REITs and the funds that own them. However, their low valuations could indicate an opportunity for investors.
Last week was fairly active within the ETF industry. The period ending May 10 saw the launch of 11 new ETFs, including funds from Global X, WisdomTree and TCW. Closure activity affected just one ETF, while several more funds underwent material changes.
Looking at the ETFs with the highest returns YTD, a few thematic standouts have emerged. As a reminder regarding long-term investments, thematic investing is cyclical. As a result, many of the YTD winners were last year’s losers and vice versa. This exemplifies the classic mantra that past performance is not predictive of future returns. However, it can be helpful to analyze performance in real time to identify thematic trends in the market.
An unremarkable week for ETF launches nevertheless saw the debuts of nine new funds, as well as several closures and key changes.
