A week after a fire at Old Geezer's Mantiques in downtown Weston left 65-year-old shop owner George Treese dead, several local residents attended a meeting of the city's aldermen to air questions and concerns about the fire department's response to the blaze.

The Platte County R-3 School Board will conduct a public hearing at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, July 9, at the Platte County Area Vocational Technical School on a proposed $4.82 tax levy for the coming term. The proposed levy is the same as for the 1980-81 term, Gerald Hart, superintendent, said. It includes $2.21 per $100 valuation for the teacher fund, $1.80 incidental, 17 cents for building and 64 cents for debt services. Hart said the district's proposed 1981-82 budget is $3,682,668. The biggest portion of it, $1,950,253, would be earmarked for teacher salaries, he said.

A man from rural Smithville in Platte County drowned over the weekend during a fishing excursion to the Little Platte River. The victim has been identified as James Stephens, 72. Major Greg Crader with the Platte County Sheriff's Department said the victim's wife called authorities about 5:30 Friday evening to report that her husband had not come home after a fishing trip at Little Platte near Hwys. B and KK. Stephens' wife had been to the site and found her husband's pickup, fishing tackle and dog. Crader said it was evident the dog had walked up and down the bank, down to the river. The area was a combination of wheat and mud, Crader said. “We assumed the man had fallen into the river,” Crader explained. Stephens' body was not found until about noon on Sunday, roughly a mile and a half from where authorities think he entered the water.

There's a new alderman in Weston. Approved by a 2-0 vote Monday night, Weston Mayor C.R. Carter has appointed Tim Hill to complete the term of alderman Amiah McCaulley who resigned, citing personal reasons, on June 27. Hill was one of two applicants for the position. The other was Joyce Burch.
