I have not attended middle school since 2019. But following the glamorous twists of my career, I have recently found myself back in the old house, so to speak, through teaching. What amazes me most about this notoriously precarious age group is not how much has changed, but how much has stayed the same. Namely, it astounds me that there has not been a more creative word developed to apply to girls who do not exactly conform to a very narrow definition of normalcy. Instead, they are still called what they have always been called: weird.
