The decorated WWII submarine left its dock in Muskegon Monday for the first time since 1987, making a 113-mile overnight trip to Wisconsin for $3.5M in restoration work.

MUSKEGON, MI — Phase one of the mission complete. The USS Silversides SS-236 arrived in Wisconsin after a 113-mile journey across Lake Michigan.

The USS Silversides hasn't left Muskegon since its arrival in 1987 and hasn't been in dry dock for over 50 years. Now it faces a journey across Lake Michigan to save it from decay.
