Some optimism in the Year of the Dragon

There are days, even in regions of the world not afflicted by The Long Dark, where winter feels interminable. Days where the muted tones of the sky reflect along the white walls of my under-decorated apartment, sunlight too diluted to cast shadows for the porthole window in which our star even deigns to shine upon Seattle from November through February. It’s light that imposes darkness, so meager as to heighten your awareness of what it’s not, magnifying what is missing. Spring has always come, the elephant on my chest has always risen and trotted off, baseball has come and swept the cobwebs of my spirit loose, reminding me who I am, but what if it doesn’t this time? This fear clutches me on the eve of one of my favorite days of the year, the holiday that is Opening Day. The title of Wright Thompson’s immaculate piece for the since-shuttered ESPN Magazine drift through my mind: “When Winter Never Ends”.

That can be interpreted a few different ways, but the Seattle Mariners were clobbered 12-4 by the Milwaukee Brewers, the reigning NL Central champs, and ceded a second straight series to start the season at a 4-6 that looks far worse by many metrics. For Hancock, it was a second straight rough outing, despite in many ways executing almost perfectly on what he can bring to bear. For Seattle’s offense, it was another frustrating, meek afternoon punctuated only by a Julio Rodríguez laser in the first inning that stretched from a single to second base on an error, driven in by Jorge Polanco, and a late inning moonshot from Dom Canzone.

The arms are warm, the bats are cold, the M’s are winning in April. That’s all in keeping with historical expectations.
