The Byron School Board voted on Monday, Aug. 17, to send a letter to the Olmsted County Board of Commissioners, asking them to prohibit the sale of flavored tobacco.

It was the first time that the different entities have partnered together in a co-design lab to help cultivate student-led solutions in the broader community.

The County Board considered restricting the sale of flavored tobacco products in 2023, but then stepped back from the proposal.

The program says it "sends cohorts of U.S. secondary-level school and district-level administrators abroad for programs focused on sharing best practices and learning from high-performing systems.”

“This is something we're co-creating with you,” Halston Sleets, a community development manager for Google, told the crowd that gathered for the event. “And with co-creation is conflict."

The restaurant opened in 2023 as a taco shop serving customers around the clock.

The title “recognizes schools that demonstrate continuous improvement through a rigorous, research-based process aligned to six standards of effective schools and validated through peer review.”

Ten candidates are running for four open seats on the district's board of education.
