For the last half-decade some of the most vital and life-affirming dance music in the States has been coming out of the Bay Area. The region’s twin cities of Oakland and San Francisco are home to a number of DJs and producers who’ve made their bones importing a wide range of genres, from Baltimore club to UK garage to Chicago footwork, and making them their own. The contemporary Bay Area sound is high-energy, omnivorous, and, crucially, the product of a local rave culture that extends almost as far back as the form itself.
