The Arizona state House of Representatives on Wednesday voted to no longer protect unborn babies using an 1864 law. After several votes, a few Republicans crossed the aisle to help pass the legislation, 32-28, according to the Statehouse’s website. Republican state Reps. Tim Dunn of Yuma, Justin Wilmeth of Phoenix, and Matt Gress of Phoenix joined the Democrats on the vote. Arizona state House Speaker Ben Toma, R-Phoenix, was deeply disappointed by the vote. In a statement, House Democrats celebrated the vote as a win.

Former Haitian Prime Minister Ariel Henry on Thursday published on social media a resignation letter he sent to the country’s government. The letter was dated Wednesday, April 24, and said he was withdrawing from his post and its responsibilities.

The Bureau of Economic Analysis on Thursday reported that the U.S. gross domestic product grew by an annualized rate of 1.6 percent in the first quarter of this year. That’s slower than forecasted by many economists, and down from the fourth quarter of last year, when the GDP grew well over 3 percent. That rate, in turn, was slower than the previous increase of nearly 5 percent in the third quarter of 2023.

Florida’s Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis on Thursday said his state would not comply with federal changes to Title IX, which seeks to prohibit discrimination on the basis of sex. Last week the Biden administration revealed changes to its rule for the law’s enforcement. The new rule changes how schools must treat LGBTQ individuals, according to the U.S. Department of Education. The new rule also requires schools to conduct quicker and more thorough investigations of sexual abuse allegations.
