Kearney needed a day like Saturday. Previously dropping three straight and having a gauntlet of a week ahead, the Bearcats got on the right path with a doubleheader sweep.

That was the mantra that guided the Kearney girls soccer team to their fifth straight victory, defeating Lincoln Northeast 8-0 in the opening round of districts.

The Kearney High boys soccer season unfortunately ended the way it began, with a shutout at home. Columbus defeated Kearney 1-0 in the District A-5 Semifinal on Monday.

Kearney lost the District A5 final in a penalty shootout, but clinched its spot in the state tournament nonetheless as the wild card.

While Millard West celebrated on one end of the field, applause and smiles would soon find its way to the Bearcats.

Kearney led for more than 60 minutes in Monday's Class A girls state tournament opener. But top-ranked Omaha Marian kept the pressure on.

On Saturday, Kearney gave the next generation of Husker fans a day they'll never forget.

AXTELL— It was a true team effort for Kearney Catholic at the Awarii Dunes Golf Classic, winning the event in a tiebreaker.
