On Sunday, Marion kicked off the holiday season with its annual Christmas parade. The event marked the beginning of the Thanksgiving and Christmas activities for the city of Marion. The parade was organized by the Marion Business Association and sponsored by the city. The theme for the parade is “A McDowell Strong Christmas.” Following the challenges of Hurricane Helene, “McDowell Strong” became a rallying phrase across the community and the parade celebrated that enduring strength while spreading the joy of the holiday season. Leading the festivities as parade marshal was Pastor Jerry Lewis of Grace Community Church. He was followed by McDowell's own award-winning McDowell High School Marching Titan Band, community floats, businesses and local organizations. Numerous dance companies showed off their routines in the procession and the famous John R. Hayes High Steppin' Majorette & Drum Co. wowed the crowd. Santa and Mrs. Claus were the guests of honor in the parade.
