On July 29, the Senate Leadership Fund (SLF) announced a $17 million investment, the first round of a total $71 million invested to elect Michael Whatley. Whatley, the former chairman of the Republican National Committee and the NCGOP, is running against former Gov. Roy Cooper for North Carolina’s open US Senate seat, currently held by Sen. Thom Tillis, who will not be running for re-election.

On Aug. 4, just 91 days out from the midterm elections, Republican Speaker of the US House Mike Johnson of Louisiana expressed his confidence in Col. Laurie Buckhoout, the Republican nominee running to unseat Democrat incumbent Don Davis of North Carolina’s First Congressional District. During a campaign stop in Greenville, where they also met with farmers and business leaders from the eastern part of the state, Johnson called the upcoming election a “midterm unlike any other.”

On August 5, the North Carolina House of Representatives voted to pass HB 268, a technical corrections bill to the recently signed-into-law budget, which includes $25 million earmarked for the 2027 Military World Games, to be held in Charlotte next summer.

With certain exceptions, crime was down in Raleigh and Charlotte in 2025, on par with the national trend of declining crime in major cities across the nation, according to the Major Cities Chiefs Association’s midyear crime report. Except for homicide in Charlotte and robbery and aggravated assault in Raleigh, crime is down from 2025 in these major cities in North Carolina.
