Nurses enrolled on education programmes often complete research projects involving humans during their studies. Undergraduate and postgraduate research is usually the culmination of a multiyear programme of study and is the final hurdle for students before graduation. Student nurses should be proud to complete their education and want to celebrate this major achievement. Although amidst all the excitement of graduation, it is easy to overlook an important part of the research process and forget that all research should be properly disseminated. Inadequate or overlooked dissemination of research contributes to research waste and raises ethical questions about informed consent, participants’ expectations and broken promises made during the recruitment process. This paper will discuss the importance of nurses upholding the participant-researcher contract with regard to dissemination and publication and why these matter for student nurses and nursing in general.Conducting research during educational programme provides nurses with valuable learning about the research process, how to conduct ethical research and the importance of research integrity.1 When conducting research involving human participants, it is necessary to secure ethical approval from a Research Ethics Committee (REC) and/or Institutional Review Board (IRB).2 A large part of the student learning comes from having to secure ethical approval from a REC/IRB and navigating the complexity of preparing the application and research protocol for submission to the REC/IRB.
