If you struggle playing in the wind, you’re not alone. Even the pros find it difficult, broadcaster and LPGA Hall of Famer Judy Rankin says. In the December 1992 issue of Golf Digest, Rankin wrote a story about her best tips for playing in the wind. Having spent a lot of time in both the Florida Keys and west Texas, Rankin has seen her fair share of breezy rounds.

From course to course, and sometimes even within one course, you can encounter variety when it comes to the condition of the bunkers. Some have that perfect, pillowy sand with plenty of depth that let you use the bounce of your sand wedge to slide right through. Some have less sand and feel far less inviting. When I was playing Division III college golf, I went through a particularly uninspiring stretch of putting. Someone advised me to tell myself, ‘I’m the best putter in the world’ each time I set foot on the green. He was trying get me to create confidence so big that it removed any doubt from my mind. He was trying to help me fake it until I made it. I understood all of that, and I appreciated that he was trying to help, but it didn’t work.
