The deadline to apply for the City of Cortland’s annual “No Mow May” program is quickly approaching. City residents have until Friday (April 26) to register by either calling the code enforcement office at 607-844-7166 or completing a form here. Once a resident has registered for the program, they will receive a certificate of participation. Construction crews on Groton Avenue in the city of Cortland continue to roll along on various projects. According to Crown City Rising, crews will continue the installation of a new water main at Monroe Heights. A couple of crews will also continue the installation of new sewer laterals between Graham Avenue and Homer Avenue. Groton Avenue is limited to local traffic. The Center for the Arts of Homer recently received grant funding to help with the cost of various projects. According to a release, the Center for the Arts received $50,000 from the New York State Council on the Arts’ capital projects fund for roof replacement and insulation of the community building (also known as the Morton Building). The Marathon Area Volunteer Ambulance Corps (MAVAC) has recently received a variety of funding to help with the growth of the organization, and to cover costs for its ambulance station project. The project represents a “significant enhancement” in MAVAC’s emergency service infrastructure for the six rural communities it services in the Cortland and Broome Counties, according to a release. According to the release, MAVAC’s new ambulance station will cost about $1.5 million. A street in the city of Cortland will close (only open to local traffic) on Tuesday for construction work. According to Crown City Rising, Helen Avenue in Cortland will be closed from 8 a.m. to noon on Tuesday for installation of a new storm sewer line. With the street part of the detour established for the ongoing Groton Avenue construction, motorists are asked to plan their commute accordingly.

The Cortland County Sheriff’s Office recently released multiple arrest reports. Below are the reports: Joshua M. Strauf and Natasha R. Kinney Strauf, 34, and Kinney, 32, of Cortland, were both arrested on Friday (April 26). The county sheriff’s report stated that when officers conducted a traffic stop on Port Watson Street in Cortland, Strauf was allegedly driving with a suspended driver’s license and Kinney was allegedly in possession of drugs. Strauf was charged with seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance and second-degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle (misdemeanors), and for an inadequate muffler and side windows non-transparent. The Village of Homer is participating in “No Mow May” for the second year in a row. Village residents have until next Wednesday (May 8) to enroll in the program. Details on the “No Mow May” program and its purpose can be found in the resolution from Tuesday’s village board meeting agenda. Village deputy mayor Pat Clune said residents have until June 7 to mow their lawns. To enroll or for more information/questions, contact the village office at 607-749-3322. The village is asking the residents not to contact the code enforcement office about the program, Clune said.

The Cortland County Sheriff’s Office recently released multiple arrest reports. Below are the reports: Roland L. Oliver Oliver, 36, of Pittsford, was arrested on Sunday (April 28). The county sheriff’s report stated that Oliver allegedly violated a full stay-away order of protection during a domestic incident in Preble. The report noted that Oliver also allegedly drove a vehicle while impaired by drugs. Oliver was charged with second-degree criminal contempt and driving while impaired by drugs (misdemeanors).
