Oil producers ended July with more cash than they expected. Thanks to the on-again-off-again war between the U.S. and Iran, oil prices are beginning August about 25% higher than they were a month ago. “At the moment, most companies are really playing a bit of a wait-and-see approach, letting cash either accumulate on the balance sheet or paying down net debt,” Tom Ellacott, senior vice president of corporate research at Wood Mackenzie, told Barron’s.
