This past week, a Mouser 25-caliber pocket pistol was added to the mix at the Museum of Veterans and Military History in Vilonia.

A young visitor touring the Museum of Veterans in Vilonia, this past week, referred to it as a “war museum.” A docent, in turn, told him that the museum is just the opposite. The goal is to honor those who served in peacetime as well as during war. And, the collection of items may be used in both categories.

Reading a Nov. 2, 1942 Life Magazine at the Museum of Veterans in Vilonia, one learns that Chaplain Howell Forgy left the pulpit at Murray First Presbyterian Church to join the Navy in 1940. The Sunday morning Japanese surprise attack on Pearl Harbor conducted Dec.7, 1941, that plunged the U.S. into World War II, naturally canceled church services all over the Navy base on Oahu and aboard the dozens of warships at anchor. As a result, Lt. Forgy, aboard the USS New Orleans, was asked by a group of soldiers under attack by enemy planes to say a prayer for them. According to reports, not only did he pray but the chaplain also put down his Bible and manned one of the ship's gun turrets and begins firing back, saying, “Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition.”

At the Museum of Veterans in Vilonia, the mission is to honor and serve veterans and educate the public regarding military history. Out of that mission, the Killed In Action (KIA) Walkway was built with a concrete path leading to where a white cross with dog tags stand. More than 100 flags stand everyday lining the way, from the beginning to the end, which concludes at the outdoor Peace Chapel.

At the Museum of Veterans in Vilonia, there are several inert landmines. There is also a land mine detector.
