They need it so badly and they don't get it,” Seinfeld, 70, said. “It used to be you would go home at the end of the day, most people would go, ‘Oh, Cheers is on. Oh, M*A*S*H is on. Oh, ( The Mary Tyler Moore Show ) is on. All in the Family is on.' You just expected, ‘There'll be some funny stuff we can watch on TV tonight.' Well, guess what — where is it? This is the result of the extreme left and P.C. crap and people worrying so much about offending other people.” Advertisement 3 Article content Seinfeld said that audiences seeking a laugh are “now going to see standup comics because we are not policed by anyone.” “The audience polices us. We know when we're off track. We know instantly and we adjust to it instantly. But when you write a script and it goes into four or five different hands, committees, groups — 'Here's our thought about this joke.' Well, that's the end of your comedy,” he said. “We did an episode of ( Seinfeld ) in the '90s where Kramer decides to start a business of having homeless people pull rickshaws because, as he says, ‘They're outside anyway.' Do you think I could get that episode on the air today? … We would write a different joke with Kramer and the rickshaw today. We wouldn't do that joke. We'd come up with another joke. They move the gates like in the slalom. Culture — the gates are moving. Your job is to be agile and clever enough that, wherever they put the gates, I'm going to make the gate.” Advertisement 4 Article content Seinfeld noted that his eponymous show's co-creator, the 76-year-old Larry David, was able to get away with edgy humour in his recently wrapped Curb Your Enthusiasm because he was “grandfathered” in. “If Larry was 35, he couldn't get away with watermelon stuff and Palestinian chicken … and HBO knows that's what people come here for, but they're not smart enough to figure out, ‘How do we do this now? Do we take the heat or just not be funny?' And what they've decided to be is, ‘Well, we're not going to do comedies anymore.' There were no sitcoms picked up on the fall season of all four networks. Not one. No new sitcoms.” Seinfeld said that standup comedians can step over the line because if they offend anyone they'll shoulder all the fallout. But again, it's the standups that really have the freedom to do it because no one else gets the blame if it doesn't go down well. He or she can take all the blame themself,” he said. RECOMMENDED VIDEO Elsewhere on his press tour, Seinfeld shared his blunt thoughts on the film industry, proclaiming “the movie business is over” in a recent interview with “Film doesn't occupy the pinnacle in the social, cultural hierarchy that it did for most of our lives,” he said. “When a movie came out, if it was good, we all went to see it. We all discussed it. We quoted lines and scenes we liked. Now we're walking through a fire hose of water just trying to see.” Advertisement 6 Article content As for what has replaced movies as the core tenant of our culture, Seinfeld was hilarious in his response. “Depression? Malaise? I would say confusion. Disorientation replaced the movie business,” Seinfeld answered. “Everyone I know in show business, every day, is going, ‘What's going on? How do you do this? What are we supposed to do now?'” He also spoke about David's viral attack on Sesame Street's Elmo earlier this year. During his appearance on Today with Hoda & Jenna last week, Seinfeld was asked what he thought of the beat-down. “I liked it.
