The kerfuffle between the Crested Butte South Property Owner’s Association (CBS POA) and the Gunnison County Library District has escalated to the next step. The CBS POA last week filed a complaint for declarative relief with the Gunnison County Court.
The stalemate between the Gunnison County Library District and Crested Butte South Property Owner’s Association continues to roil into the summer. The library district feels it went through a thorough review process for public entities building public facilities (Location and Extent Review) and now has a valid building permit in hand for its new 10,000 square foot library project in CB South. The CB South POA contends any entity doing any building in the subdivision is required to go through the Design Review Committee for review and approval. The library district did not do that. It is now in a court battle.
More bus opportunities from the Gunnison Valley over the mountain passes are coming up. Gunnison Valley Regional Transportation Authority (RTA) executive director Scott Truex told the board at the May 22 meeting that a contract has been officially signed with Bustang to keep the two buses a day running between Crested Butte and Denver.
After several hours of discussion in a Monday evening work session over budget issues and the need for potential new revenue sources, the Crested Butte town council narrowed its revenue options to two and agreed to continue the conversation. While making no official decisions, the council indicated the desire to get more information and potentially pursue asking town voters to approve a vacant home tax this November or reallocate how current Real Estate Transfer Tax (RETT) revenues are spent. The goal is to generate between $1 million and $1.5 million in new revenue annually.

The town of Crested Butte is more confident than Gunnison County that the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) will approve its roundabout project that is slated to begin later this year. The county is worried the Brush Creek roundabout will see a state-caused delay until next year. For town, it is the Red Lady roundabout by the Crested Butte Community School that it hopes to secure bids for this summer. Preliminary work could begin this fall if everything lands into place with the majority of work happening in 2027.
The Crested Butte South Property Owner’s Association and the Gunnison County Library District appear to have reached an agreement whereby the Library District can continue earthwork on its site for a new library while going through the POA’s Design Review Committee (DRC) review process. The agreement was struck last weekend and signed Monday. That resulted in not having to go through a scheduled court hearing on Tuesday.
In the first of what Gunnison County commission chair Laura Puckett Daniels hopes will be a regular and quarterly confab between representatives of Gunnison County and the various North Valley government entities starting with the town of Crested Butte at the June 15 council meeting, there was some appreciation for the effort and some tension on the discussion points.
Water supply issues are expected to grow worse this summer as drought conditions persist in the valley. The Crested Butte town council voted Monday to authorize town manager Dara MacDonald to enact additional water restrictions on the use of municipal water in 2026 so long as the county remains in drought. Her decision does not need to be approved by council, but the board is expected to approve new, stricter fines for those found being out of compliance in the future.
The Gunnison Valley Regional Transportation Authority is looking to update its mission statement and solidify and investigate expansion of bus and air services in the valley. That was the overall takeaway of an RTA retreat held in April and reported on at its last meeting.
The Crested Butte council gave an unofficial thumbs up to the final draft of the proposed zoning and subdivision code update at the June 15 council meeting. It will now go before the Board of Zoning and Architectural Review (BOZAR) for their comments before heading back to council for the official vote and approval in July.
