The Crested Butte council gave an unofficial thumbs up to the final draft of the proposed zoning and subdivision code update at the June 15 council meeting. It will now go before the Board of Zoning and Architectural Review (BOZAR) for their comments before heading back to council for the official vote and approval in July.

There will be no fireworks lighting up the North Valley this Fourth of July weekend, as Gunnison County made the decision on Monday to enter into stage 2 fire restrictions ahead of the busy holiday weekend. The town of Mt. Crested Butte issued their decision on the same day to forgo the fireworks display portion of their July 3 Independence Day celebration this year. Gunnison still has its fireworks display planned for Saturday. The new fire restrictions took effect on Tuesday morning at 12:01 a.m. which mean no open burning of any kind.
For the town of Crested Butte’s 2026 fiscal year, the town staff made it clear at the June 15 council meeting, that “summer will tell the story.” Sales tax revenues through May in Crested Butte were down 7% given a slow tourism ski season due to an unusually lean snow and warm ski season. That lean snow situation has local officials on edge for a possible extreme wildfire season this summer and if that happens, tourism could suffer a second sales tax blow in 2026.
With the Crested Butte Save As Your Throw (SAYT) trash program, expenses are going up and so will your trash bill next year. The town council chose to raise the bin fees the minimum 13% recommended by staff to basically cover town costs for the program and that takes the monthly cost of a 64-gallon bin from $15 to $16.95.
Gunnison County is partnering with other governmental entities to develop a Gunnison Valley Corridor Plan focused on the North Valley. The process is expected to last 18 months and end up with a vision for the future of the area between Gunnison and Mt. Crested Butte.

You never know what might happen when walking to a party in Crested Butte. First just running into a bear can be exciting enough, which it was for them, but before cresting East Maroon Pass they noticed something weirder than a bear that was running away: a rogue fire smoking away above them next to an avalanche chute.
The poll results are in for the questions of whether to place a potential tax on second homes in Crested Butte or reallocate some of the Real Estate Transfer Tax (RETT) funds being collected on the November ballot, and based on results of the poll, both would apparently win in an electoral landslide.
The calvary arrived in Crested Butte and there was noticeable excitement from area residents about seeing the help. Several United States Postal Service (USPS) workers from the Front Range got to Crested Butte Sunday evening and lent their helping hands first thing Monday to start digging out of the package pile mess that had been building up inside the Elk Avenue location for about two weeks.
